it is the son of the Indian variant which is more transmissible ( less virus required to infect someone)
I suspect that boffins have said that this will go on happening unless you vaccinate the whole population

I think that Johnson does not want to go down in history as the one who completely killed the UK with not only Brexit but also his pandemic performance. I think he will wait to see what happens after another 4 weeks of vaccination and then spaff into a 'decision' based on what the boffins tell him. Of course, he and all the other fat cats will survive this stuff, but his vanity will play a part. Rees-Mogg and his ilk won't give a toss, but BJ wants to be loved.
About two weeks ago the Prime Minister "saw no reason why the remaining restrictions could not be lifted on 21st June." At that time the Delta variant was well known about. New infections had increased by about 50% from a fortnight earlier. The vaccination rate had remained steady since about the middle of March. Hospitalisations were increasing (though at nothing like the rate of new infections).
Today Boris Johnson said there would be a review after two weeks and he was "confident" the delay would not need to be longer than four weeks.

This situation is changing on a daily basis so it is impossible to say what the next four weeks will bring. Of course we all want our freedom back but more than anything I want this pandemic to be over and Covid-19 to be a distant memory.

Sorry, jd. I don't see it that way. Operation "Soften Up II" will begin in a week or two. Hospitalisations will probably increase; a new variant "may have been detected"; "a little longer period to study the data may be needed"; "don't want to undo all the good work"; blah blah blah, etc. etc. etc. Dr Death will be wheeled out with another of his incomprehensible charts and a further delay will be announced. When you say people will not tolerate another delay, apart from ditching their face masks, what do you expect they will do?

You're in for a long wait then, Lady CG. This pandemic will not be over any time soon. The virus will be around for years, if not decades to come. Descendants of the 1957 and 1968 'flu pandemics are still around today and manifest themselves every winter.
What the country needs is a government which accepts that and accepts that the virus will not be eliminated. It needs to instil in the population that people will contract the disease and the only thing they can do is to get vaccinated so as to protect themselves as far as possible. After that they've got to get on with their lives.

Dates have now ceased to be of interest to us. We will both cease to comply with any anti-Covid regulations from that date. It will be difficult to notice the difference t.b.h., since we live so quietly, but it is there and enough is enough. I do hope that one of us gets arrested for something, it will be a new experience.
Boris has really lost it in that he doesn't seem to understand how many 'reasonable conservative-minded people' he has lost through all this. 80% of the adult population is vaccinated, for goodness' sake!

All the rest and those which are causing so much damage, relate to businesses. They cannot defy the regulations (e.g. pubs must continue with "social distancing", restaurants must continue to run at 50% capacity, businesses with office workers must continue to see that they WFH were possible). Most of these businesses rely on licences which are controlled by local authorities who will be more than pleased to enforce the legislation with gusto, with the ultimate sanction - loss of licence - in their armoury.
