That is done where I live but nobody cares about a few cents more.
However, the indigenous population is tax-exempt. Their shopping carts are stuffed to the top with junk food. And it shows. Also with the level of illnesses.
New Judge nailed the hypocrisy of the announcements.
But that's just the usual blah, blah. Nothing much will be done.
Personally, I think food should never be taxed.

We've been educating people about the dangers of a bad diet for decades and it clearly doesn't work on it's own. There is literally no bad outcome to imposing a tax on unhealthy foods. Even if it doesn't change peoples buying habits at all, you are at least raising some extra revenue to put towards paying for their health issues.
Of course the other side of the equation is the amount of physical activity we undertake. Despite the proliferation of gyms etc. for the more motivated, most people are a lot less active in their work and leisure time than they were in the past.
