I'd get him something to 'do'. A set of watercolours, a brush and a good quality colouring book (it's what I've got my 8 yr. old granddaughter as well as some hair thingies and bits).

I remember well the day I heard a child saying 'What does it do?' instead of 'Great! What can I do with it? ' A sad day.

It's certainly cheaper than what I'd thought of, which would be some sort of 'experience' (such as a trip to Disneyland, rock climbing instruction, a scuba diving course or similar).
