. . . do you get an 8-year-old for Christmas when all of the world's toy manufacturers are queuing up all year long to give him their products (so that he can review them online) and who happens to earn twenty million quid a year anyway?

Perhaps all we ABers 'of a certain age' should get together to start a Youtube channel reviewing brands of cocoa, carpet slippers, hot water bottles, anti-wrinkle creams, arthritis aids, incontinence pads, etc?
I'd get him something to 'do'. A set of watercolours, a brush and a good quality colouring book (it's what I've got my 8 yr. old granddaughter as well as some hair thingies and bits).
I remember well the day I heard a child saying 'What does it do?' instead of 'Great! What can I do with it? ' A sad day.
A sensible suggestion, Jourdain2. (Sensible sugestions in Chatterbank though? We can't have that surely!)
It's certainly cheaper than what I'd thought of, which would be some sort of 'experience' (such as a trip to Disneyland, rock climbing instruction, a scuba diving course or similar).
