First time back since posting this tragedy.Very little shocks me or suprises me on AB or in the real world but that comment,coming from Gromit is startling to say the least.
Obviously Gromit has never been a sailor or understands the total respect for all seamen/women amongst fellow sailors whatever their nationality.The Brits and US were not slow in offering the Russians assistance in the Kursk disaster and that is how it always should be.

I have spent many years sailing around Biscay and Channel Islands both British and French and hold a Coastal Skippers ticket and all that goes with it. I do not mock other sailors and the tragedies that may befall them. We have a law that insists we always go to the rescue of others at sea.
What I would call Tilly2 and jno right now would,at least, get me suspended for their crass and unwarranted insinuations.

Back to the OP, yes it does look like the Russians have a way to go on submarine tech. The problem with subs is there is little room for error and such tragedies tend to be the only way issues are found. Lets hope they are nearing the end of the learning curve and fewer happen in the future.

Their Tech is certainly way behind the rest and crude in the extreme.
The kursk tradgedy was confirmed to be caused by seawater leaking on to old style torpedoes propelled with amonnia.This created chlorine gas and ignited causing the internal explosion in the torpedo rooms.
The very same tragedy happened years previously on a British R.N. Submarine whilst the boat,I believe, was being loaded in harbour.
The same type of torpedo propellant was used then with the same tragic result. The RN never used those torpedos again. If only the Russian navy took note this calamity would not of occurred with the Kursk.

My mistake. The Torpedo propellant was Hydrogen Peroxide NOT Ammonia.

The russians were still sensitive about the Brits going thro the submariners' knickers apparently(*) - that is, seeing all the equipment, secret cody things and so on, as well as the latest exploding torpedo....so they let them die slowly instead and saved their secrets. It does seem incredible
