Sure as hell did not happen when I married my wonderful wife.
MIL and FIL had a acrimonious divorce about 10 months before our wedding. FIL,who was a stinking rich GP would not attend his daughters wedding because the MIL,who was *** poor was attending.
FIL gave us about £300 for a honeymoon. MIL subscribed for us some Food recipe cards which ran every month over a few years.Trouble is we only got half the set as she peed her money away and couldn't afford to continue the subscription.
My wife ran up a beautiful wedding dress for herself on a old Singer hand cranked sewing machine. Likwise two Bridesmaid dresses. One for her sister and one for a fellow nurse in her training set.
She baked the three layer fruit cake and my best man knew a copper who previously was a baker so he iced the cake for about a fiver. We provided the nurses hat and copper's helmet as decorations on the top layer. Best man also knew a character who provided a Roller on the day to bring wife and brother (who gave her away) to church and us both onwards to the reception at the Victory Services Club at Marble Arch . I suggested, beforehand. I put £300 behind the bar for guest drinks ( this was 1976). The steward was amazed and assured me the booze prices were the cheapest in Paddington and £150 would be more than enough. He obviously didn't know coppers, doctors and nurses when booze was available with a kitty behind the bar. By the time the photographer had finished with the usual photos of wife, bridesmaids and I on arrival at the reception the kitty had been drunk dryand I was asked to pay for my first pint. :-)
When and if my two boys marry we will definately consult with their in laws and contribute equal expenses for their happy occasion.
I have no regrets that we managed a wonderful wedding on the cheap and so proud how my wife could knock up a great wedding dress and those of our bridesmaids.
That's lovely retro, sometimes less can definitely be more x
That’s lovely, retrocop.
You don’t need to spend ridiculous amounts to have a memorable wedding. Saving up to spend thousands on a wedding doesn’t make sense.
Personal circumstances will always dictate I think. When my daughter married 23 years ago, she and her husband had already bought a house and it was fully furnished. I was divorced and on my own - the Lord alone knows where the "father of the bride" was, but there was no way he would contribute anyway. I paid for the cake, flowers and table decorations. My daughter made all the invitations, order of service and place settings herself. I gave them a lump sum to spend as they liked (as much as I could afford at the time). It was a wonderful day and I'm now saving up for their Silver Wedding.
Because they benefit from getting her married off and the boy then takes responsibility for her welfare. Obvious ain't it.
"no they didnt get married to each other"

LOL, you have to say, cus it's AB, ya never know!

Traditions trasmishions you don't have to follow any tradition you don't want to or can't.
As Chico says its traditional but many of the people I know pay for their own admittedly this was a few years ago - with the cost of living these days I`m sure we`d assist our children, if we had any, no matter which side we were on.
Hmmmm no matter how hard he tried my father couldn't get Mr Cal to accept the three goats, barrel of Mead, pair of fine chickens and the little parcel of land down by the beck for taking me off his hands. What are we talking about 1423?
I do not think it is expected anymore! I got married in 2009 and Me and my husband paid for most of it, both parents contributed, my husbands side paid a lot more than mine too, not everyone can pay.
