"Giving tougher sentences will prevent people from carrying knives because nobody wants to go to jail for 10 or 15 years just for carrying a knife."
So lets start banging these savages up for at least 10 years a piece no remission.

TTT - // AH, the bloke in the link says it would deter. //

Indeed he does, but I would suggest that he is a minority of one in that view.
He is not in a minority of one. Whether or not harsher sentences deter is debateable - opinions differ - but one thing is for sure. Banging up these people for longer would keep them off the streets for longer - and I'm all for that.
// The liberal elite will soon be out in force the the poor little darlings 'ooman rights.//

yeah too right
we hanged people for murder - and hey that didnt stop people murdering durrrrr!
// Whether or not harsher sentences deter is debateable - opinions differ//

but the facts dont ..... prison doesnt work - 60% return to prison - 75% never have a job afterwards

( and having had a few as tenants, I can see why)
//prison doesnt work //

It keeps criminals off the streets. That works.
It does, which is a good thing. But there are at least two issues. It doesn't tackle the gang culture issue so there'll be plenty to take their place; plus prison costs. We already have more in prison than our prisons were designed for. We're trying to find alternatives where possible.
OG, the gang culture isn’t going to be eradicated in five minutes. We need to do something now and if that means building more prisons and shouldering the expense, so be it. The law needs to be seen to be taking tougher action.
Mostly all down to an inbred culture, but nobody will admit it, in case they are called a racist.
That assumption is that stiffer sentencing will result in a deterrent effect (rather than simply removing folk from society). I doubt there would be much of a deterrent.
