What is your GPs policy if you have an appointment and the doctor that you were due to see goes of sick on the day that you were due to see him/her? Would your surgery rebook your appointment or get you in to see another GP in the practice? (or maybe get another GP in to cover the appointments?)

I posted last week that I had tried for a week to get an appointment and finally got one for today (after waiting another week). Just had a phone call to say that the GP that I was due to see has rang in sick and my appointment has now been rearranged for next week.

Just curious as to how other surgeries operate in this situation. Cant see why the doctors appointments cant be delegated to the other GPs in the practice.
Thanks.

There is no slack in the NHS, a doctor may call in sick or be on holiday or on study leave, in which case it is difficult to take up the absent doctors duties. This has been in the NHS for as long as i have known it and it has got worse.
Locums don't "grow on trees" and almost impossible to get at short notice.
Rather than wait a week, go to the " walk in centre" , or wait for the gp to return .

If it was an emergency I would.
Just curious nailit - what is it with you and doctors? Nothing seems to go right for you.
This has never happened to me, but I think they would try to get me to see another GP on the day.
Ours would just give you next available slot. Very frustrating for you Nailit. Hope all is sorted for you soon.
No chance of moving to another practice I suppose?

Not just me Maggie, my friends and family all seem to have the same experience with both my own practice and other GP practices locally.

As said, other local practices seem equally dire around here. My own GPs are excellent...once you can get past the receptionists.
