Mikey...I mentioned it at the beginning of the thread. Do you not read answers?
Sorry ummmm....I can't answer that question as I have no experience of that particular situation.
Throughout history women have been for the taking whether due to war or natural disasters and i suppose it would be an advantage if you were to be paid for the "inevitable."

this wasn't just about the Oxfam news story
the event if which were 8 years ago
just the way the news companies are trying to blow it up out of all proportions and sensationalising it
I don't know how long the Oxfam workers were out there for but I'd imagine that they would be looking for female company. The women would be desperate to get money to buy food etc. for their children and would be vulnerable So they would probably be willing to sell the only thing that they had.I just hope that they were well paid for services rendered.
I can not see how paying a prostitute can help the economy, unless a bed tax is implemented, then they could get two for the price of one or even BOGOF, then the whole system would go tits up.
Jonny....can you confirm if you meant this thread to be about prostitution in general, or is about the OXFAM story ?
What is most appalling is that aid workers are taking sexual advantages of young women (and men) in return for handing out the food which they are paid to be doing anyway, this has been going on for years - the UN is the worst of all - it is well known and nothing is done about it.

Give me a BJ and I'll give you the food to survive....that sort of thing?

this q was about prostitution in general but brought to fore front of thoughts regarding the Oxfam story
it being the oldest profession in the world .....
ummm; //Give me a BJ and I'll give you the food to survive....that sort of thing?//
Some girls in Nigeria when questioned believed that sex for food was the rule. Read Mary Wakefield's article above.
Thanks Jonny...I'm glad that we have cleared that up.

For the record, my original comment regarding prostitution still stands.

But the OXFAM case is seriously worrying, if we can't rely on the aid agency's and charities, to get things right.

I heard an OXFAM person being interviewed on the Today Programme this morning and it was like trying to nail custard to the wall.
Well I'm sure "the earth moved" for them.
It depends if the woman has any choice. If she was pimped by someone who took the earnings, then it's wrong. If she sold herself freely, then that's her business.
My dear late father would turn in his grave if he was told there had to be a rule : when you are on govt business then you should not consort wivda ladies of the night

DSK ( Domenique Strauss Kahn did if you remember - coupable de proxenetisme des prostituees mineures
je pense - [zat eez I seenk.] - honey trapped with the coloured cleaner in the New York hotel. He tried the " I am a red blooded Franshman" defence but eez wife Anne Sinclair ( Brit) wasnt buying and divorced him)
