Amazon market place refers to sellers other than Amazon themselves.
The market place is another eBay - private sellers and traders advertising on Amazon.
As has been said, items offered by 'Amazon' are actually sold by them. Items offered via 'Amazon Market Place' are sold by sellers who're simply using the Amazon website as an advertising board. (However you've still got the backing of Amazon's complaints procedure if anything goes wrong). Buying from Amazon Market Place is roughly the same as purchasing 'Buy It Now' items from trade sellers on eBay (where you get the backing of eBay if anything goes wrong).

There's also a 'middle ground' position with Amazon, whereby some independent sellers place their stocks in Amazon's warehouses, so that although you're actually purchasing from an independent company, it's Amazon that packs and despatches the product on that company's behalf.

If you want the real thing, buy from Amazon.

If you want it cheap, and are prepared to gamble on getting a fake, buy from A. marketplace.
