We need new furniture for a new house, my husband went into Next to get a catalogue and they were priced at £2! No thanks, what a cheek.

You don't need buy a catalog just look at the online catalog
http://www.next.co.uk/
Then either go and see it or get it delivered.
Their catalogues are huge and very glossy...not cheap to produce. Guess they could give them away and raise the price of their goods...
They've been doing that for years. I've never bought one out of principle.

Argos & IKEA to name just a couple produce thick, coloured catalogues free to everyone.

I've even had IKEA book through my door.
I seem to remember Argos attempting to start to charge for their catalogue many years ago, when previous issues had been free. This was before the advent of internet shopping when the catalogue was really the only way to see what they sold. Sales must have plummeted because the next catalogue was free again.
