Sporting jamborees like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics are a huge gamble for the host city.
Cities need deep pockets for the cost over runs and in a lot of cases the legacy is dubious or none existant.
In short they are poor value for money, and should be left to the more wealthy nations to host.
Not sure that passing on the Commonwealth Games is a sign that there is a decline in SA, or that it is in crisis because the blacks are now in charge.
Post apartheid there was a rush to take every major sporting event to South Africa, the Football World Cup, Olympics, Rugby and Cricket World Cups. But they haven't seen much return for the outlay and have decided enough is enough.

ok so It's all tickety boo down there then gromit, thanks for your reassurance.
Empire games, yeah, right. Durban was the only applicant. Nobody wants to host them. The British Empire is dead.
well the US of A couldnt hold a proper oscar ceremony
does that mean Trumpo's land of the free is in terminal decline

and anyway
knife throwing and shooting contests
they are still going on arent they ?
they could save on water bills by not filiing up the pools, and just staging Synchronised Grinning.
and the leddies in houses of the night ( brithels ) could arrange - synchronised sinning !
The London Stadium (Olympic Stadium) cost the tax payer £750 million.
It has now been handed to Porn Barons the Gold Brothers for £2.5 million a year. Yep that's right, it will take 300 years until the taxpayer gets its money back.

Perhaps the people in Durban aren't as daft as us?

don't talk rot gromit, we are miles ahead after 2012, they sold nearly 2000 apartments at London prices for a start. Anyway stop changing the subject I'm talking about the Empire games in Durban.
What do you want me to say Tora?

This is conclusive proof that the blecks are hopeless without their white masters?

Stop being a complete racist Nkbo edad.
Oh dear, I've even given up buying the Cape Times/Argus these days (the dailies here in Cape Town) because we now are a nation in complete disarray ... so didn't even know about the Games that might/or might not happen in Durban ... we have numpties for politicians, no police force to speak of and certainly don't even have an army anymore ... the Minister of Finance, Pravan Gordhan is about to be sacked, the bloke in charge of PRASA (the railways) earns R5,9 million for sitting on his rear ... anything "colonial-based' is simply doomed here in South Africa – the government and most of the electorate (blacks) countrywide hate anything that's 'elitist.' ... Go figure ...
I'm more interested what's happening to our NHS, Schools, Health Care Centres, & the hardship that's going on in the UK at this time.
Nkbo edad

What's that?

gromit: "What do you want me to say Tora? " - nothing at all really I'd hoped you'd see the mess that SA has become rather than spinning it round to have a go at our Olympics. Is it racist to observe and report? However I really must defer to linotype who seems to have direct experience.
TWR: "I'm more interested what's happening to our NHS, Schools, Health Care Centres, & the hardship that's going on in the UK at this time. " - then why not raise your own thread on it? eh?
Empire Games - Once you've been back, you can't have a games......

Roses are red,
Violets are glorious
Watch your Imperial back
If they let out Bloody Pistorius.
Linotype - I am currently staying just up the coast from Durban and have also not heard a thing about this. However, you've summed up the situation in the country very well.
I've already said what I thought TTT, I live in the UK Not S.A. It's about time people started thinking about this country first.

I don't see any suggestion in the Link that The UK should give anything to SA, so why try and divert the thread to UK problems when there is no connection?
