If I or anyone wanted to take a day trip for example to Paris or Bruges etc could a kind of interim passport be obtained or would a full price passport have to be 'bought'?...I'd be glad of as much info as possible please. Ta Muchly.

No such thing as an interim passport any more.

There used to be a "short term" passport for people who wanted to do as you say, hop over to Calais for the day.

Unfortunatly so many illegal immigrants have come into this country and got passports for dead people, or other ID scams, that now getting a passport involves much more detailed checks.

I think for your first one you now need to visit the passport office for an interview.
