>>> Anyone have plans for the day?

Yup! Sleeping! I wanted to go to bed hours ago but the cat on my knee had other ideas. He's only just jumped off ;-)

[Good morning!]

morning Chris, time to sleep then, you are a definite slave to your cats....
Good evening. I happen to still be awake watching the antics on Bourbon St., listening to oldies on the radio, drinking a beer, smoking a cigarette, and now and again playing a video game: Multi-tasking!

you are indeed sanmac... off to bed soon i suppose...
>>> you are a definite slave to your cats

That's the only way to relate to cats, Emmie ;-)

Good morning/evening, Sanmac.

i guess Chris, though i had a cat for 16 years, i wouldn't have another, mostly because i can't get up and down 4 flights of stairs that often to let it out.
Bed maybe another 45 minutes or so, and then I'll hibernate. We had a couple of days of around 1 degree. Now we're back down into the freezer: Minus 22 right now, and -32 in the morning!!
Question Author
i get that, hibernating seems like a good plan, -32 is way to cold for any human being.....
The radio stations are actually making announcements the if you see anyone (street people) in "distress" due to the cold to call 911.
Question Author
street people?, those sleeping on the streets do you mean, surely not... who could survive in that cold
hi everybardy !
just going back to bed....
went to bed er 8 pm and cant sleep that long

morning PP

>>> who could survive in that cold

I had to google it and found this:
"The use of wind chill is to show the effective temperature at a particular wind speed. For instance in calm conditions at -29°C a well clothed person is in little danger, if we add to this temperature, a light wind of 10mph, this will then give the same effect as a still air temperature of -44°C when exposed flesh can freeze in a minute or so. Increasing the wind to a breeze of 25mph gives an equivalent of -66°C with severe danger to exposed flesh within seconds rather than minutes".

So it's the wind chill temperature (and, of course, the amount and type of clothing worn) that's all-important, rather than just the temperature on a thermometer. Even so, those temperature referred to by Sanmac are ruddy cold! (I've refereed a football match with a wind chill temperature a bit below -20C and I know that an hour and a half outside in those sort of temperatures, especially when wearing football kit rather than thermal clothing, is far from pleasant!).

[Good morning, PP]
Good morning, Peter. Emmie, the local authorities open up "warming centres" when it gets this cold. They are usually located in church basements, school gyms, or other suitable temporary locations.
I'm feeling very naughty at the moment, 'cos I'm drinking wine at around half past five in the morning!

It's possibly not quite as bad as it sounds though: I've just found roughly a glass and a half of claret left in the bottle that I had with my Christmas lunch. On opening it to find out if it was still drinkable, I discovered that it most definitely was - but then, of course, I'd introduced more air into the bottle, meaning that it probably wouldn't keep much longer. So, working on the principle of 'waste not, want not' . . . ;-)
>>> They are usually located in church basements, school gyms . . .

Those gyms can't be like the gym we had when I was at school then, Sanmac. I'll swear that it was always a lot colder inside that building than it was outside it!
Buenchico, I've almost finished my can of beer, so I might just open another and just drink half of it...And I really mean that, just half, only half, and no more, just half:)
Question Author
-32 for anyone is cold, lets hope that those on the street get some shelter. I have only had alcohol at this hour when Mr EM came back from work, New years day, 2000 and we drank a bottle of rather nice champagne.
Question Author
sanmac, i couldn't drink beer at this hour, not before toddling off to bed.
