Someone I know has just come home from holidaying on the Costa Dorada, she said she had to pay on arrival at the hotel 5 Euros.I was in Majorca last June and did not have to pay anything on arriving at my hotel...she thought it is because it is the Balearics...I told her that comes under Spain...so same rules apply.

Does anyone know anything about this so called "entry tax"?

No, it doesn't exist in mainland Spain, the Canaries or the Balearics
Some hotels do charge on arrival but it's not a tax. It's down to the hotel.

There's something here about a tourist tax in Catalonia:

I've experienced a tourist tax in Germany, but I don't know anything about a similar tax in Spain.
I thought that tourist entry tax was abolished in Spain a few years ago. I wonder if it was a fiddle?
Should've been in the brochure :-(
I can't really remember but I think it was refundable. I stayed in Spain last year and when looking at hotels many of them requested it on arrival.
As Bookbinder points out, it's just in Catalonia.
It is an Eco-tax.......holiday makers having to support the Ecological support on the islands.
It is not popular with the hotels or tourist agencies.

bookbinder, that is what she was paying for then...thank you for the link.and thank you all who have responded.
Have a nice evening.
I haven't paid it in Menorca for about 10 years, maybe it's hidden in other charges.
Are you sure it's not a visitor tax". We go camping in mainland Europe and several countries have a daily tax for visitors (switzerland and Italy, to name but two.
In Italy last year our tax was added to our hotel bill.
Aah, so it's just a rip-off then, Squad.
That's ages old sqad, I can promise you we paid it in Menorca about 2003 and haven't paid it since (knowingly).
Prudie.....maybe, but as far as i know it hasn't been rescinded and hotels in Spain & the Islands MAY charge but they usually do not.

There has been a lot in the Spanish press about the Ecotax, but, not being interested i haven't followed it....but will in future.

bhg.....agreed.
