Cos in olden days, people used to open their presents - i.e. 'boxes' on the day after christmas day.
You sure that's right Salla?

I always believed it was when the gentry gave gift boses to their staff.
Happy birthday for boxing day. Just don't expect any birthday. My sister and nephew are both boxing day and it seems the card shops think nobody has birthdays in December.

I thought it was something about living in servants getting a day off to take a box (present) to their family?
*expect any birthday CARDS.
It was the day you gave Christmas boxes to the servants and other lesser beings.

I don't think there is a definitive answer to this.
Dunno boo - it was a complete guess. I was showing off.
You're more likely to be right.
Vibra - too right. I am really 87.

dont worry milly im 29 this year so its not anything i get excited about thanks
im going with jno's answer, if only because it agrees with mine :P
I agree with Boo, also when you tipped the tradesman. That is why Boxing Day cannot fall on a Sunday. This year Monday should officially be Boxing Day but people seem to ignore that now. The 26th is officially St Stephen's day as well.

cheers peeps that just about explaind it
yours wasn't there when I started, B00, but it's what I'd always heard too
In olden times there used to be a poor box into which better off people would put gifts. The day after Christmas the box was opened and contents distributed to the poor of the parish. Hence Boxing Day.
St Stephen's day.
I think by the time it comes around you feel like you're ready to box somebody's ears.
Well I knew it had something to do with servants and I got sort of mixed up with Mothering Sunday!!

:o(
Chambers goes with giving presents or 'boxes' to employees.
Because christmas brings out the worse in folks and by this day they're punching each others lights out!!!
