Mouse problem

I got a new logitech plug & play mouse today because my current one (same type/brand) has an annoying loose connection. It's supposed to just plug in and go but on 5 attempts I'm getting either 'unidentified device, installing etc and then an error message that some file is missing' or 'successfully installed' but still doesn't work.

Tried it in another laptop though and it worked straightaway without installing anything.
Any help please?

Have you tried completely removing the program which controls the mouse by using "Add or Remove Programs" and then re-installing using the CD installation disc??
try a different USB socket.
Sorry, just noticed it's plug and play so shouldn't possibly need an installation CD.
You could try removing it from the Device Manager and then let your computer find it again when it's re-plugged in.

I've tried it in 2 usb ports, no difference. As I said on another laptop it worked immediately.

Been to device manager with old mouse and it shows 2 mice. The logitech one and ps2 something. Put new mouse in this morning, says installed correctly but doesn't work. went back to device manager and only the ps2 one was there, logitech had gone. Don't have a cd.
Have you tried conning your laptop into believing that it's the old mouse? i.e.boot up with old mouse, switch off, plug in the new one and boot up again - Your laptop might not notice the change.

Alternatively, for the sake of a fiver, it might be simplest just to head to your local reasonably-sized branch of Tesco and purchase a different mouse altogether:

The wonders of bush telegraph, thanks for getting the message.

I'm really stumped on this, I have switched off, plugged in the new mouse and booted up again, it found new device and says installed but just won't respond. Also if it's relevant the red light flashes all the time but it does work starightaway in another laptop.

I'll cut my losses I suppose but it was a tenner reduced from £20 in Smiths.
Have you tried pressing DELETE when booting up and going into the DOS menus to see if the Plug-and-Play section is OK????
Just a thought!!
Please read BIOS instead of DOS above.

That looks a bit beyond me Wak, it shouldn't really need all this fiddling with though should it. I might ask IT at work tmrw and probably give up and get another one. Thanks anyway.
One last thought, Prudie.
A PS/2 mouse is one which plugs into the round green socket of the comp, next to the round purple socket for the keyboard.
If you are not using a PS/2 mouse, then why is it showing in the device manager????
Question Author
I think I put PS2 because I didn't read it properly and have played ps2 alot but not through my laptop obviously. It probably said something like P2 or PS synaps/synaptic pointing device??(sorry can't remmebr the exact words). My work IT have suggested that tonight I go into device manager and delete anything related to mice and then try again.
I'd second that suggestion, Trudie.
Good Luck.

Well I've tried that and it didn't work. having removed everything and rebooting the error message with the new mouse in was 'Core.Foundation.dll not found' or the other way round. Don't worry I give up - what a piece of broccoli!!
This is what I like to call a "..." (I actually haven't thought of a name, yet...)

Anywho, I have this problem, I just won't work with the PC, suck, really.
I got a new mouse (Or it might have been a new PC)...
Women and computers - pah!
If it says you're missing DLL files, then make a note of which ones are missing, and then go this site and download them.

http://www.dll-files.com/

Once they are installed, try plugging the mouse in.

Thanks k if i can summon up the interest I might give that a go.

Woody, whoever you are I suppose you think you're funny.
Purrdy, I do consider myself quite humorous. Women and technology don't mix. you wouldn't beleive some of the muppets I have to deal with on a daily basis. Try feeding the mouse to your undernourished, cat-pouch craving moggie :)

Windy I'm sure they're not muppets at all, do you sneeze all over them perchance?
