mouse problem

mouse stopped working. I am using Windows 7, on a desktop Dell, I am able to click on a prog on desktop to open it then the mouse stops working ( I can move the pointer across the screen but neither left or right click is operational) has anyone else come across this & able to correct fault ? Also because of inability to use mouse is there a way of switching off computer using the keyboard only ?. TIA.

To switch off computer using keyboard, press Windows key (Start) navigate using arrows keys to right side of start menu, select shutdown and press Enter.

What's the mouse, wireless, usb lead or ps2 lead? Wireless, check batteries and connection. Usb lead, unplug and plug back in. Ps2 lead, shutdown computer switch off power, unplug lead and plug back in restart computer.

Thank you SlackAlice your advice re shutdown works a treat, can I use the keyboard further to move about ( without mouse) ? For instance when I open Answerbank with mouse not working how to move pointer to select Technology or Computers.

I do know its a pc rather than a laptop, because you stated so.
Using same method as before, Windows key, using arrow buttons select Control Panel/ease of access/ease of access center/Make the keyboard easier to use. Put a tick in the 'Turn on mouse keys' option click apply and ok.

Try and keep it on one thread, makes life easier ☺

To SlackAlice. Thanks very much for your answer which I have printed off in order to help me resolve the problem which is occurring intermittently. Having also entered the situation into a Windows 7 problem forum I understand it to be a W7 fault & therefore put it into A/B to get all possible answers to the question, I apologise for repeating the thread in Technology but wanted to widen the view.

Hi guys. I think I have finally solved my mouse problem, I did a complete Kaspersky scan last night & found 10 viruses, then when I logged on this morning mouse was still playing up so tried another usb mouse & happy to say all is now ok, so I reckon I had 2 probs which thanks to your imput is now cleared. So again many thanks to Slack Alice, Chris & Chuck.
