I have Amazon Prime via alexa firestick. I am thinking of buying a kindle on Amazon Day, as I really miss my local library which has been closed since March and shows no sign of ever opening again.
Would appreciate any suggestions of which to buy. I only want to read books, not play games or videos etc. I am a technical Luddite, so a simple one would suffice. Thanks for all help given.

Few libraries do books which can be read on Kindles other than the Kindle Fire and these have a very limited battery life. If you only want to read books one of the liquid-paper types is better, such as Kobo. Most libraries do books in the right format and you can join many libraries, but not all, even if you don't live in the area. Because they only refresh the screen when you turn the page, as opposed to many times a second, the battery life is enormous.
If it's just for reading, get the Paperwhite. No frills technology...easy to use. You can control text size, spacing, brightness. You can use it in bright sunshine...something you can't do with a kindle tablet. I've got an old one and it works just as well as when I got it.

Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
Which? Best Buys...Kindle 2019, Kindle Paperwhite 2018, Kindle Oasis 2019 (about £230) and Kobo Forma (about£240).
You first need to think about where you'll be getting your eBooks from. If you're planning on downloading titles from your local library service, you should check which devices are compatible with the formats that they use. For example, eBooks borrowed from the library service here in Suffolk are compatible with Amazon Fire tablets, Android tablets, iOS tablets, Nook and Kobo eReaders but NOT with Kindles:

So you shouldn't buy ANY type of Kindle if you're planning on getting most of your eBooks from a local library service which operates in the same way that the one in Suffolk does.

However, assuming that you do want to purchase a Kindle, the main review sites (such as Tom's Guide, TechRadar and PC Mag) all seem to agree that the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is the best buy overall (primarily because of the quality of the screen, which closely mimics a printed book) but that the regular Amazon Kindle is still a decent buy for those on a budget. e.g. https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/best-kindle
paperwhite for me. I have got an ipad with kindle on it but the kindle screen is so much better for reading.
Paper white for me too, I have three kindles but my paperwhite is my go to for reading, so comfortable to read from no eyestrain problems.
I have a Kobo and get my books from libraries. I do sometimes buy books, too, from Kobo, Kindle and Google, all which I read on my Kobo.

Kindle isn't the only eReader
A simple Paperwhite for me too. I like being able to read in the dark.
The new paperwhite has a built in light so you can read in the dark without turning the bedside light on.

About 6 years ago I suggested one of these for the wife for xmas as she is an avid reader and was buying at least four paperbacks a month.. she said she would never use it !
Went ahead and bought it and set her up on Kindle Unlimited for £7.99 a month... I doubt she goes anywhere without it now. When she leaves home she checks she has her phone, keys, purse and Kindle!
its also on special offer atm @79.99
Wait until "prime day" later this week, there may be some really good deals
I love my paperwhite because all I can do on it is read!

No notifications/ distractions etc with internet..... just reading!

Its black & white no colour xx
I have a paper white as well as the fire. But the paper white is great for book reading. I get lots of free books and on the Amazon website you can filter out the free book.
The paper white is easy to use and the battery last ages. You only need to be connected to the WiFi to download your books. There is adjustable lighting and font size.

which is why Kobo was referred to several times before your comment.
iPad, every time. (Or other tablet).

App is free, Kindle works far better, plus one less thing to cart around.
You can use an app called overdrive it is for libraries you can borrow books from it.
I’m thinking of buying a new kindle too. By the sound of it, paperwhite is the way to go. It has a built in light does it, to enable reading in the dark? My current one has a leather cover with a light which has stopped working, which pulls out from the corner,
How do you transfer all your books over to a new kindle? I have hundreds on mine which I’d hate to somehow lose.
all books you have bought are stored in the cloud. if the new kindle is registered to the same accoubt you can download any/all of them again
paperwhite is ok but i prefer the page turns on my older model
What’s the page turner on the paperwhite, Bednobs? Is it at the side or somewhere else? Why don’t you like it?
