I noticed that phrase in a Dan Brown book.
I've heard of wetting it, letting it draw, and even mashing it, but never that usage.
Is it an Americanism?

A prog recently, a chemist at Typoo recommends “steeping” the tea bag for 5 minutes before adding milk etc. 5 minutes? I’d have drunk mine by then.
i think soaked is a synonym for steeped
I'm an American, and have never heard that. Americans don't even let the tea steep properly...let alone soaking it.
this is how the Americans Make tea!

Death's too good for them!

TBH though err indoors makes tea with very little actual tea in it, she basically drinks hot water with some milk in it that once made a brief acquaintance with a tea bag. I tend to go for builders tea, which kind of works because she can use the bag after I've extracted 99% of it's flavour!
One brews tea.
I always thought tea should be mashed.

Agree with TTT about the American way. Eugh.
Local saying is 'let it brew'
Liptons is like drinking dessicated orang-utan extracts from their rear ends - it's awful.....to be fair, one can get other brands.......

Bobbisox1, tea a vile drink? Never.
Tea, although an Oriental, is a gentleman at least
Coffee is a cad, a bounder
Coffee is a filthy beast
If making tea in a cup with a teabag then 30 seconds is ideal. Any much longer and it becomes stewed.
