Received a Christmas card today from someone I’m not in contact with - why do they bother? Is it to make them feel good or like they’ve somehow done their bit?

perhaps they are trying to get in touch, was it a relative, someone you didn't like anyway?
Maybe they hope you'll send one in return. Or they want to keep in contact with you without actually speaking to you.
I exchange birthday and Christmas cards with an old uni friend, but we don't make contact any other time. I like to keep in touch though.

It’s my step-dad’s mother - he remarried and we’re not in contact any more.
then ignore it, if its not someone you like, care about.
I think some folk just go through their address book regardless and give it little thought.
" he remarried and we’re not in contact any more."

Well you are now.
I think it's nice to receive cards on any occasion because it shows someone is thinking of you.
you were once her grand-daughter -well defacto. If it bothers you enough to have to make comment on a public forum then bin it and forget it. People 'bother' usually because they are thinking about you at Christmas.
I disagree. Some people send cards for the hell of it. It's a bit like sending a text message and opting to 'send to all'
It costs nearly 60p to send a card by mail and you have to put yourself out to go post it.

I don't send them :-) I didn't even know the price of a stamp!
I agree with Mamya, some people have a 'christmas card list' and send to the same folk year after year.
I just send a couple 60p will not break the bank
May be that's she's like the neighbour my mum had, Sherr....wants to receive lots of cards.....

She would visit all the neighbours to count their cards then brag that she had received more.
One year my mother kept the cards from the previous year and put them on display too....fair annoyed the neighbour.... :-)
I don't send any cards. The neighbors used to pop ones through the door but never got any back so now they don't bother and that works fine by me.
I think some people, especially of the older generation, do tend to send out lots of cards from their list each year, it used to be the done thing. But I think it's a bit unfair you all seem to deem its done out of no thought or care.
I find them untidy and a waste.

I used to put them up and send them when the kids were little.
I think it's good to keep in touch in some way. You might not want them coming round to your house every day, but it's nice to know someone is still thinking about you.
I suppose that was mean , what I mean was it's more of a habit - it's December and time to get the list out. There may well be care put into the sending, I obviously don't know the people involved.
I've only had two cards so far. I'm embarrassed to put them out as I look like Nora NoMates. Be grateful for what you get.
