Sister's BT landline is not working - when you ring it it is constantly engaged. She contacted BT via mobile and they told her there was no fault on the line.

I too chatted with BT and they said too - no fault on the line in fact the chat guy said the problem was coming from inside the house.

I told her to take plug out from wall etc, changed her batteries in the phone and also look at the phone cable itself.

It is still beeping. Anybody know of any other attempts to try. Thanks

Try a different phone plugged in - borrow one if necessary then you know if it's the phone itself at fault..
1. try another phone socket, in either sister's house or somebody else's.
2. try another phone in the house socket.
Has she only one phone or is there an extension?
I presume this is an answerphone which has to be plugged into the mains. Does she have an ordinary phone to try in the phone socket.

Can she get a dialing tone, what noise is the handset making ?
Question Author
she has changed phone, only one phone/one line/one socket and no answermachine. just the lady coming up saying "user busy - please hang up".
Why has the phone got batteries in it ?
Question Author
sparkly i don't know I'm on the other side of town.
Question Author
like I've had batteries in my phones over the years but they were for amplification ie for the deaf.
The phone may have batteries if it is a handsfree set. But you normally have to use rechargeable ones.

a) has she put the right batteries in?
b) has one of the buttons stuck?
she needs to try the line with a traditional corded phone with no batteries and no answerphone. Has she got internet?
What's the make and model of your sister's phone?
Question Author
LOL - no internet, neighbour lad has inserted correct batteries. It is a corded phone
Question Author
I pick her up tomorrow and hopefully get a chance to look at it. Thanks for your replies.
"Why has the phone got batteries in it ?"
All landlines without a cord, (mobile handsets) have batteries in them, they can usually be replaced but need replacing with rechargeable batteries. they look very similar to AAA or AA batteries but traditional batteries will not suffice!
Does she hear user busy message when she picks up the phone or is that what you hear when you try to ring?
The handset has to be plugged into the mains, otherwise, how do the batteries get charged ?
Ordinary batteries will of course work, they just cannot be recharged, so, do not last long.
Batteries are only for power cuts. I have ordinary batteries in my cordless phones and I don't remember when I ever, if ever, had to replace them.

Is your cradle plugged into the mains socket ?
If there is a power cut the batteries retain the date and time on the phone screen and contacts etc
