Another great actor dies, and yet there are many including myself who thought he must have died years ago.

Here was an actor who didn't actually become a 'star' in the true Hollywood sense, in fact he was denied access to the US for some years, because of his Communist sympathies, and yet he appeared in more that 1000 films.

The film I remember him for was the 1962 version of The Phantom of the Opera, in which he played the phantom.

I remember him from the T.V. series The Human Jungle. R.I.P.
>>>and yet he appeared in more that 1000 films.

I think more likely 100 films not 1000.

To make 1000 films he would have had to appear in over 10 films a year for every year of his life.
RT Film Guide lists 73 films but there will be more.
Ooh he had such a sinister scary voice. Darn good actor.
A great actor......he also played the part of Charles Dreyfus in the 1964 film " A Shot in the Dark" to counteract Peter Sellers "Clouseau....fabulous actor.
May he rest in peace. Tho' in the actors after life he might meet up with Peter Sellers. I loved his comic acting in the Pink Panther films.
Appropos the Pink Panther, where does he stay when he comes to England?
I last saw him in an episode of 'Poirot' about five years ago.

Blimey!

He would've been 90 then...he REALLY didn't look it. I woud've guessed that he was around 70.
Err...it was Miss Marple, not Poirot (Murder at the Vicarage).
he was a very good actor, sad though..
another screen comedy great passes on.

this is a sad day.

VHG Sorry held my finger down a little too long on the last zero.

Sorry, but I thought Peter Sellers was overrated.
I thought he was very good in the panther films, and also in Assylum, the portmanteau film starring brit Ekland among others.

/// another screen comedy great passes on. ///

Hardly call him a comedy great, he played rather sinister roles.
they hoped he would become a leading man but he always looked a bit too grim on screen for playing that sort of role.
Sad to lose our well know actors - but not a bad innings - RIP Herbert Lom.

Hi Sipowicz, glad you posted about The Human Jungle. Been racking my brains all day trying to remember the name of this TV series. Loved him in this - and also in Pink Panther of course.
I remember him as being the baddy in all the black and white films, very sinister. And of course in the Pink Panther films with Peter Sellers.
