Why Go To Heaven ?

I heard a discussion by a group of theists who were saying why they wanted to go to heaven . It was a bit weird because no one said anything positive.
1. There would be nothing to do because there would be no need to , nothing to aim for, no desire, no ambition, no winners or losers, no one would be dim or bright or talented, everybody equal, no arguements , nothing to talk about , not even the weather or ones health. Nothing but eternal limbo !

As one man jokingly said, it was lust and greed that had driven him to achieve a highly successful life. He said he started chasing the girls when he was 7 and hasn't stopped since.

2. They more or less ended up with a consensus that the only reason for going to heaven was it's better than the alternative.

Surely theists must have another reason for wanting to go ! What do you think ?

I have always thought of heaven as being the best bits of earth. If you want people to debate with, they will be there, if you want to garden or paint or enjoy fine wines they will be there, also the beloved people we have lost.

I'm not a theist - quite the opposite. But as my (devoutly Christian) mum-in-law used to say, I wouldn't like heaven anyway because it would be really boring and none of my mates would be there - they'd all be 'downstairs'.
Hell doesn't exist so we're all going to heaven.
Coccinelle, I take it you've never been to Swindon.

True doctordb, I've never been to Swindon!!! So not worth the detour?
If you are happy with the alternative then why not let others think diffrently ?

It's comparible to folk wanting a nice house here & now because it's better than not having a nice house. One might think up lots of debatable reasons, but the main thing is that you want the nice house.

woofgang //If you want people to debate with, they will be there, if you want to garden // Good answer but what would there be to debate about.?
Would the garden present any problems to overcome or would it always be perfect ? Fine wines ! Sounds great !

coccinelle; If you do go to Swindon (and Heaven) watch out for the 'Magic roundabouts'.
I'd always taken the communist view that religion was the opiate of the masses. ie. It gave the downtrodden masses a promise of better things in the future, compared with their lot now.
It seems to me that the existence of heaven is only questioned by people who have life pretty good on earth.

woofgang I like your idea of a custom made heaven . I wonder if that means everyone gets their bespoke part of one heaven or we all get our own. Well not me I'm not going.!

Graham. Funny you should say that, the group were very well heeled.
Woofgang, there is a flaw in your version heaven, suppose you friends and family don't qualify?

Who from AB is going to heaven and who's going to hell? :)

I'm not going to Heaven, Hell, Limbo, or Purgatory. My atoms are staying as stardust.
Our local Baptist minister said " Most people don't qualify not even the Christians who don't have a Personal Unity with Christ. " He said all these conversions including death bed conversions are totally useless.
" It doesn't matter how devout you are, how often you go to church , or what 'good works' you do . None of these things matter without this deep Personal Unity with Christ. "

I am sorry I haven't a clue what all this PU stuff is. Maybe some of our ABers may know or understand. I'm not even on the first rung.
The minister did once say that heaven is not some etherial place where PU Christians sort of float around but rather
it's something like earth without 'sin', something like woofgang's idea , I should imagine.

I once had the misfortune to stay in Blackpool for 3 nights on business. I had heard that it was very popular but after this brief visit I vowed never to go there again. Ghastly place, full of miles of tat, drunks and pavement-pizzas. So I would question the notion that Hell doesn't exist.

( the trams were nice though )
modeller; //My atoms are staying as stardust.// There are many things which do not consist of atoms alone; Music, hope, courage, dreams, poetry, happiness etc..... it's a long list.
Question Author
khandro I agree , here on earth but what has that to do with my atoms when they are scattered in the winds ? Would you like to expand ?
modeller; If things can exist without the need of atoms, doesn't that open up a lot of possibilities?
