People lie for many reasons. Some think they are obligated to lie about their abilities in order to get ahead in this competitive world.

Others try to cover up errors or guilt with lies. Still others falsify reports to give the impression that they have done work they have not done.

Then there are those who lie to damage another’s reputation, to avoid embarrassment, to justify previous lies, or to defraud people of their money.( Rev. 21:8)

"Lying can, in some situations, be good..... if it helps another person. Why would you tell a cruel truth when the lie could be a comfort. Should we not try to comfort people if we possibly can?"

Like telling little Johnny that grandpa has gone to heaven ?
v_e; you have the advantage on me there, so I looked her up and found; "Gisela Jones, Our Savior Lutheran Church, Gisela Jones brings together the practice of small unheralded deeds of compassion with the prophetic call to others to join her in broader action for social justice. She gently persists in placing before us opportunities to act on our neighbors’ behalf."
Is she a friend of yours? she sounds like it. :-)
She was my German teacher at night school, Khandro.
I don't believe in small and unheralded acts of compassion. On the extremely rare occasions that I perform any act of kindness to anything which isn't an animal I make a b***y big noise about it and demand full credit. And as for broader action for social justice - what, with my feet!
It reminds me of the funeral director who said to me " Have a nice Day ".
A lie is an assertion of 'fact' that tests ones knowledge or willingness to believe in the arbitrary . . . a lot like religion, don't you think?
Still ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
goooooooodlife....have you nothing intelligent to say on the matter rather than spouting religious ***?
Yet he might influence those without the intellectual rigour so see him and his kind for what they are.. Therefore, hats off to AB'ers who take on the thankless task of challenging his pasted and copied assertations.
Why don't we just ignore posts from this person ( me included ! )

Goodlife is a Jehovah Witness. If they knock on your door and you know that they are JW's in advance, its unlikely that you would open the door, so I am suggesting that we do the same here on AB.
I agree that the abuse of the OP should stop.
It has now gone on nearly all day . I do not have any religion but I would not abuse anyone who has.
After all has been said about the OP he has not changed his opinion and is not likely to.
Why do you carry this on?
Because this site is called The "Answerbank" not "The Pulpit".
Vulcan...well said !

You know a another factor behind lying is fear—fear of the consequences or of what others may think if the truth is told.

It is only natural that people wish to be liked or accepted by others. This desire, however, can move them to distort the truth, even if only a little, in order to cover up shortcomings, to hide unflattering details, or simply to leave a good impression. Appropriately, Solomon wrote: Trembling at men is what lays a snare, but he that is trusting in Jehovah will be protected.—Proverbs 29:25.
"But I lied...twice"

classic clip

goodlife //////I see that many here feel about lying, but their rationale is that lying is not wrong if it does not harm anyone./////

It does not harm anyone or it can save someone from getting harmed or heartbroken are two different things. And I believe telling lie is OK in the later but not in the first. Your actions depends upon the intentions behind those actions, and it is only you who know the real intention.
Goodlife, you lie.
I say, that's a bit strong. "You're economical with the truth", or " You prevaricate", might be less confrontational.
goodlife was asked by distraught 5 year old if her seriously sick pet dog was going to get better and do dogs go to heaven. What would you have said to comfort her ? Remember , this was a 5 year old, who needed comfort not a sermon.
I would have said I hope it will get better and I do think pets can go to Heaven. Whether I believed that or not.
