he never mentioned licking and money !
This is a cultural thing and in the UK to a lot of people feet without shoes are a form of nudity. In lots of other countries it is simple courtesy to remove outdoor shoes rather than track outdoor dirt across the floors, a question of hygiene really. Bare feet rather than with socks on is a distinction lost on lots of people, to them a matter of preference and at that point bare feet are often, but by no means always, an indicator of a hippy-ish/nature kind of outlook. Quite often those who prefer to wear shoes indoors do so because their feet smell from being wrapped up nearly airtight for hours every day and they don't want the embarrassment of releasing that in someone else's house.
Romans are the fashion of the devil. I hate people seeing my feet, especially the toes. But at home although I love to go barefoot when you have a thirteen week old puppy with teeth like needles and cow's hooves dog chews you soon learn to wear slippers.
I wear flip flops at home & work. My pet hate is stilletos on my parkay floor.....grrr
It’s interesting to see people’s attitudes to indoor shoes. Some people think you’re rude if you keep them on. My dad thinks you’re rude if you take them off in his house. It looks like one is getting a bit too comfortable and planning to stay for dinner and breakfast. (So he says)
I wonder if Sandie Shaw or Zola Budd are on AB to answer that...
We always took our shoes off as a child and had our indoor foot wear by the door, usually slippers. Now we take our shoes off and replace with indoor foot wear in the porch. I suppose living in the county means no one would want to trail muddy boots or shoes into the house. I have three robust mats for visitors to attack before entering the main house -and outside scraper and two inside ones, though people who come usually ask if I want them to take their shores off. It depends - if they are just coming into the kitchen its ok, but I would not want anyone going into the living room with shoes on. As for socks or bare feet - I was told by a podiatrist that going barefoot can be bad for some people. She suggested wearing fitflops ( fit not flip) which exercise the feet while walking, and I wear these constantly when indoors.
Yes, interesting how some attitudes go. What kind of "specialist" thinks our feet are not made to do the walking on their own ? I think I have always had difficulty with pets being primarily in the kitchen and the same would apply to outdoor footwear - if my food is to come from there I would want it to be the cleanest room in the house and not the dirtiest. A matter of hygiene, I would say.
Karl - the point is that the kitchen floor is (usually) easily washed, whereas the carpet in the sitting room isn't! I expect people to remove shoes if coming into a carpeted part of the house but not if they're only coming through the back door into the kitchen.
tamborine, flip flops arent great for your feet, theres no proper support....

My grandad always told us off for having bare feet in our house so that's why I always wear socks and slippers.

Shoes and socks off within a few minutes of getting home, to be fair with two dogs in the house with a habit of dropping square edged biccies all over the place, it does teach you to look where you're going at times ;-)
KARL //What kind of "specialist" thinks our feet are not made to do the walking on their own ?//

A podiatrist, look it up if you don't know what one is. People with certain conditions and conformation can create more problems by walking barefoot. It you walked barefoot from birth that would be different -but walking in shoes which give support, then casting off the shoes to walk barefoot some of the time can cause problems. Of course some conditions like bunions can be alleviated by waling barefoot.
Personally I would not want someone's sweaty or potentially infectious bare feet walking all over my flooring.
I've tried slippers in the house and had to take them off after a short time, I like my feet free - slippers went to charity shop !
First thing I did when I went indoors was to take my shoes off, then put slippers on. Until I got diabetes and my feet began to go numb and now I wear socks to keep my feet warm and I really can't tell if I am wearing them or not unless I look at my feet :(
15.09 , How many dogs, did you say you had in your house Baldric ?.
So do I Margie. I have done since childhood. My mother was always nagging me to wear slippers - I hate things on my feet. When I was young I would go barefoot most of the time whenever possible, inside or out, weather permitting. I absolutely hate slippers. And I hate socks too.

/I always go barefoot at home, winter and summer./
