No, it's how politics works.
It's life but not as we know it.
i dont get what the problem is - he did resign (didnt stand for re-election).
It WAS a great election result - for boris - as he said
PH has no say over whether he's recommended for a peerage or not
There's no contradictions there - he did resign whn Boris became PM, it was a great election result for Boris and Boris does have moral authority to do what's right for Britain. He was a loyal Tory and served well for many years.
//...he did resign whn Boris became PM,//

But did he fall because he didn't like the idea of being pushed?

Mr Hammond was an arch-remainer who would have sooner seen the government collapse and/or the Tory Party disintegrate than capitulate to Brexit. He is no great loss and should start a business as a funeral director. He'd do well.
Hammond said he would resign if Boris became PM. When it was known that Boris would become PM he kept his word, How disgraceful is that for a polititian?
Oh well, if we're doing quotes from politicians today, here's one of my favourites:
"I am a raving Euro-federalist . . . a pro-European of the most violent, dyspeptic and incurable disposition"
[Boris Johnson, 1999]

That was before he heard the case to remain. Then projects fear cleared his mind and changed it. :-)
