In the good old days, we used to answer the telephone with 'Hello, Whitehall 231.' With the rise of mobile phones and spam calls that doesn't seem sensible.
So, what's a polite way to answer one's mobile phone?

Hello, Buckingham Palace....
Whitehall 1212 ???
hello usually, if it's cold caller then it's a swift cut off the phone
I put on my poshest voice (not easy for a Yorkshireman) and say sweetly, "AIDS helpline. How can I help?"
If the reply is a mumbled, "Sorry wrong number" I press the red button.
If the caller says, "Ey oop, yer soft booger!" I know it's my wife (so again I press red).
Hope this helps
Hello ? If it's a cold call "Chinese Laundry " with an approprate accent.
I just say "Hello, it's Ethelred"

(Well OK, I use my real name, not Ethelred)
I just give my name and "Good Morning"

i just say "good morning" or afternoon or evening - whenever it happens
The most useful for an unknown number is probably 'I'VE NEVER HAD PPI'. If they're still there they may be worth speaking to...
It really depends who it is and can vary form from ' Hallo..... (insert name here).....' to 'What do you want'?, but if it's a number I don't know I'm always super polite.
"If it is an unknown caller I answer 'Hello Eccles Cake'"

Why would you say hello to yourself if its someone you don't know and assume that they are you?......
Tallulah Bankhead ( her real name by the way) always used to answer by saying
"Hello, Darling, who is it ?"
Like I'm sure many people: if the number is not in my list of contacts I don't answer it. If there's anything worthwhile going on a message will be left and I can choose to ring back or not
OK, you're on the train. So?
Whitehall 231 doesn't sound very sensible anyway -
Unless you really are Whitehall 231 of course ...
Usually gets rid of the spammer in normal life..
(For an unknown number call) To quote Bart Simpson...

"Joe's Taxidermy. You snuff 'em, we stuff 'em!"
Good morning, good afternoon or good evening, depending on the time of day.
How did you know I was here????
Like others, I greet known callers familiarly but to unknowns "Password please" - at the least, it wrong-foots them to start
