Holland has rejected a Brussels plot to work with the Ukraine, could this be a boost for the ‘leave’ campaign?

/// The treaty, which would see a major shift in political, trade and defence co-operation between the EU and Ukraine has been automatically accepted in 27 member states, including Britain. ///

/// The Netherlands is the only country to oppose the plan creating a major stumbling block in what many considered would be the first step in Ukraine becoming a member of the EU. ///

...they will be crushed!
I don't think the result is binding. It was more of a consultation, and the Dutch Government can easily ignore it.

It is insulting to refer to 'the Ukraine'. When Russia regarded the country as the an annexe of Russia, they used the term 'the Ukraine'. we should never have used the term ourselves, but it is completely meaningless after the fall of the Soviet Empire.

Russian does not have a definite article so it was never called by them the Ukraine, simply Ukraine (Ukraina). The word translates as border country, the use of the definite article makes perfect sense in English. Ukraine on its own is ugly.
Your second post was not there when I typed, Gromit, but it illustrates my point perfectly. Saying simply Ukraine is like saying simply Netherlands.

Jackdaw,
It's the other way around...

// "The Ukraine" is incorrect both grammatically and politically, says Oksana Kyzyma of the Embassy of Ukraine in London.
"Ukraine is both the conventional short and long name of the country," she says. "This name is stated in the Ukrainian Declaration of Independence and Constitution."

The use of the article relates to the time before independence in 1991, when Ukraine was a republic of the Soviet Union known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, she says. Since then, it should be merely Ukraine.

There is no definite article in the Ukrainian or Russian languages and there is another theory why it crept into the English language.

Those who called it "the Ukraine" in English must have known that the word meant "borderland", says Anatoly Liberman, a professor at the University of Minnesota with a specialism in etymology. So they referred to it as "the borderland".

"After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukrainians probably decided that the article denigrated their country [by identifying it as a part of Russia] and abolished 'the' while speaking English, so now it is simply Ukraine. //
...then why do we still say The Caucasus instead of just Caucasus?
//Voters in the Netherlands have rejected in a referendum an EU partnership deal to remove trade barriers with Ukraine.//

Notice the Netherlands actually gave people a chance to VOTE on this. We had no such referendum. We had better make the one we will have decisive.
And no doubt the Dutch will be forced to vote again and again until they return the 'right' result in good old EU fashion.
Isn't the usual process that something is rejected, the EU gives the relevant country a concession/bribe of some sort, the vote is retaken, and then passes ?
AOG Holland HAS NOT said no to the EU it has said no to a EU trade deal with Ukraine. You are (I am sure intentionally) making it look as though The Netherlands have voted to leave the EU , which is very far from the truth!
^They will, when given the choice.
No he hasn't EDDIE, that is all in YOUR mind.

Getting worried are you?
Same thing isn't it Eddie ?

EU wants to make a trade deal with the Ukraine, Holland has said no to it. That is a no to the EU as it is an EU deal.

Whether there is a "hidden" general disapproval element to that vote or not, it's still telling the EU no.
I misread the title. For one glorious moment I thought it said, 'Hollande says No to the EU'. Short-lived dream.
I'm not the least bit worried, I am certain that when it comes to the referendum there will be a significant majority in favor of 'stay'.
//I am certain that when it comes to the referendum there will be a significant majority in favor of 'stay'. //

The latest poll prediction is 51% stay 49% common sense out. The gap has narrowed by 5% in 3 weeks, and the stayers have already run out of reasons to remain in. As long as we outers keep on exposing the downright lies and misinformation of the stay in volunteer slaves, we should escape the clutches of the EUSSR.
Shades of the Scottish Referendum come to mind, wait until the silent majority speak and stuff the nay vote - my prediction at 12-1, 65-70 stay in....not unlike north of the border and, thanks, I cleaned up on that one at the bookies. Could I bankrupt Ladbrokes yet?
DTC, //Could I bankrupt Ladbrokes yet? //

Don't see why not. According to you, so far you've been involved in some pretty extraordinary ways in so many other areas of life. ;o)
