I am reminded of some Australians going to Loughborough University. They had considerable trouble making themselves understood at the train station when asking for a return to Loobaroo......

Spoke to a German tourist years ago who was off to Yedburg - realised after a few minutes realised he meant Jedburgh !
Even Perth confuses some people.

Auchtermuchty is one I remember having to spell out on the phone at work one day - it took ages to get the name sorted.
However its pronounced I'd rather not hear the word at all.
Avoch is a good one too.

And Kirkcudbright. And Auchiltibuie.

I could go on...
I love watching folk trip over trying to pronounce Kirkcudbright.....
Ker-coo-bree

Tsk 2sp, you've just taken away some of my afternoon fun wondering how many ABers are working out how to say it ;-)

I was on a course once and a girl told us that on the last course than she had been on she was late on the first day. The trainer was not pleased and asked her why she was late. She told the trainer that the 'Fekking' bus was late - the Trainer was not local and was stunned by the answer and had never heard of Ecclefechan or it's shortened form of Fechan
Milngavie !! ....
Sorry Eccles!

I'm sure we can find others to torment the masses with!

I like the bus from Glasgow which goes to Ecclefechan....

As an Englander married into Scotland more than once, I confess that I was brought up to call it Glarsgow....in fact I still do, even though I lived there for quite a while.
might it be Salmondgrad after this autumn?
I once heard Bearsden pronounced as Beers-den
