So says Dr Stuart Waiton from Abertay University who said that the entire exercise was fuelled by "virtue signalling" and that it was time to stop doing it.

Renowned anti-slavery hero David Livingstone, who was a Christian missionary and is seen as a hero worldwide after describing slavery as the "greatest meanness ever perpetrated", was condemned in an audit because he once worked as a spinner in a mill using West Indian Cotton and a perceived 'defence' of cotton masters.

In a review conducted by Glasgow City Council, eight statues were condemned for being directly linked to slavery, while 62 Glasgow streets and locations were found to have a ‘direct’ or ‘associational’ connections to Atlantic slavery.

Glasgow City Council will now reflect on the findings of the report before deciding what to do next, with SNP leader Susan Aitken already demanding the city apologise for these links.

An Edinburgh slavery review consultation was also held last year which was described by leading academics as a "farce."

Personally don't feel any of these statues should be removed or street names changed. Glasgow was built on money made from the slave trade etc whether we agree with it or not. It happened and we should learn from it.
Even the Scottish Daily Express report uses weasily words.
They say ‘look set to’ not that they have or will pulled down statues and change names.

And
which ‘could’ see statues removed.
Not WILL see statues removed.

Just a thinly veiled attack on the SNP with elections next month, based on made up assumptions.
If they had any sense it would be moved to Stanly near Perth.

I presume. ;-)
'Stanley'
I think another Aber has fell of a ladder.
I think there's a fairly large pile of ABers laying at the bottom of that ladder Roy.

There are indeed.
Well, if this is true I wonder if they will do similar for Robert Burns?

Was he not an overseer of the slave trade? Can you imagine the end of Burns Night, the demise of haggis, (how many enjoy only the address to the meal ratherthan eating it?) no more singing of Auld Lang Syne?

Ouch!
Wokeism should be like Dulux. One good coat covers all.
Well, if this is true…. Lol… it’s not

Bet they’ll miss a bit, choux.
Well done Gromit!
William III (aka King Billy) is also listed in the audit. Imagine they try to remove his statue.

Seriously, the audit looked at people who in some way were linked to slavery, and explained the connection. It did not recommend removing loads of statues.
In some cases they were people who inherited wealth and in no way were personally reprehensible.

Robert Burns did accept a post in a plantation but never took it up.
(And personally I prefer haggis to the black pudding you get in the north of England with its big lumps of fat!)
That's a harsh description of our southern cousins. :-)
The statue should be replaced with one of Idi Amin ... "The Last King of Scotland". With a celebratory black pudding supper.

No, it didn’t recommend removing loads of statues and no one suggested it did. The OP clearly states that the council has condemned eight statues, while 62 streets as locations were found to have connections to slavery, and will now reflect on the findings of the report before deciding what to do next. Gromit doesn’t appear to have understood that - but it will be interesting to see whether or not those eight statues remain in their current locations. Watch those spaces.

//I once worked in a cotton mill. Maybe others on here did so too.//

Nah, but my family owned them in days of yore
