You need the Vogue knitting book Robinia :)
I have a copy amongst my collection of knitting paraphernalia .
Forgot to mention I'm collecter all things knitting .
oh right smowball, sorry I hadn't paid enough attention. Keep practising, it's a lovely feeling when you make something you can wear...even if it's only two kniited dishcloths sewn together to make a boob tube :o)

I've got lots of vintage patterns which were my mum's shaney, how she had the patience to knit 3ply I'll never know.
ooh yes Robinia ..three ply ....my Mum used to knit loads of 3ply stuff .It seemed to go on forever but was very neat when finished .Do you remember having to hold the skeins of wool while mother wound into a ball ?
Tell you what's easy Smoball and very nice to do .
Dishcloth cotton ..you can make lovely face flannels etc just by doing different patterns and colours in a square and then crocheting round the edges .They make nice gifts with some fancy soap etc .
Oh we'll soon have smowball knitting her own swimming costume shaney

Yes I remember sitting for ages holding the wool skeins until there was a sudden break where the moths had got in and chewed it, lol.

This is a contact address in Scotland (with pattern) but there are many English sites too on Google.
I'll join, I haven't knatted for years but at one point of my life I did it all the time - picture knits, fair isles, arrans, you name it, I did it.

Lol, this is taking off nicely!

Would also be handy to know best places to buy wool at a good price - it can be very expensive!
Thanks for posting that pattern Maggie.
Copied and pasted.

Went to dig out my patterns and they've all glumped together :-(
Depending upon what you wish to knit, either a poundshop, some charity shops, or if you're lucky a Wool Shop (I doubt they exist now, my local one shut its doors about 20 years ago. Shame, as the ladies were knowledgeable and friendly.
can i join this club please. i have always knitted a lot and crocheted all sorts of things. never mastered tatting though.

when my mother died last year i found loads of wool and lots more knitting needles. so i'll be okay for a while. she also had loads of hand knitted jumpers, cardis, etc. which i gave to charity shops near where she lived. i hope they have gone to good homes.

At the moment i am knitting oll video tapes into strips (then crocheted together to form wider sheets) and am then fastening them to stakes in the garden to make windbreaks for tender bushes and trees, e.g. magnolias. should explain that we get a lot of salt winds. have decimated the fruit trees and the rowans planted about 4 years ago. most of them are virtually leafless.
What a great idea Lady J. My daughter knits supermarket carrier bags into "new" carrier bags which are very strong and last forever. For the Jubilee, Tesco's red, white and blue carrier bags looked very effective when knitted up.
Knitting bags ?
Yes tony - and lots of blokes are good knitters, welcome to the club!
Thanks for the info Maggie on knitting for Fish n Chip babies. I will put it in the next newsletter for my Church Ladies Group.:)
Re: the supermarket carrier bags knitting pattern I remember one in the Daily Mail some years ago, but never actually tried it - looks interesting!

fortunately we don't have such big families to knit for any more

Maggie - Fish n chip baby clothes, can you provide me with an organisation/address to send them please? Many thanks x
Thanks for that Ann, have never actually seen the pattern in print before. Will pass on.
Ann, I only have a Scottish contact (see link a few posts back). If you google "fish and chip babies" I think you'll get some English addresses. A group of knitters in Aberdeen send thousands of jumpers and hats abroad every year, it's a sight to see them - all the colours of the rainbow.
there is an elderly ladyinearby village who knits plastic carriers into tote bags and sells them. she uses the money to help support an orphanage in india. the carriers are cut into a continuous strip about inch wide and then knitted. the one i bought lasted ages. safeways bio-degradable bags rotted firstand i had to replace them. i made one and reinforced it with bailer twine. maybed i should use video tapes.
I've just completed my first row of the baby jumper/vest. Forgot how good it was to switch off and knit.
Idiot box on in the background, intelligent box in front (i.e. AB)
kinda glued to the tennis at the mom tho.

Smow, Thank you. xxxx
