Sons Gf Has Hit A Huge Deer :(

Young Smow and GF were driving this eve through a road in woods on way home in the dark when a huge adult deer literally leapt out of trees straight onto the road. She slammed on brakes but didn’t stand a chance and smashed into it, bonnet flew up which covered windscreen so she couldn’t see a thing. Thank god she managed to stop car without further incident. People stopped their cars and came to help but they are both very shaken and really really upset about the deer. There was nothing they could do though.... I hear it happens quite a lot?
Could have been so much worse. Thank god they are ok.

A similar thing happened to a neighbour of ours a few years ago driving through Cannock Chase one night Smow.
Wrote her car off, she was uninjured though.
Glad young Smow and his GF are ok and uninjured.

If the deer was injured it would be best to inform the Police who can call out people to deal with it. Most areas have experienced people willing to assist.

No the deer was killed outright. Think the people who stopped to help made the necessary phone calls. They had no idea who to ring.....; )

Get the car's suspension checked, our son in law had a similar experience with quite a young kamikaze deer that we have round here. The car seemed fine for a couple of days but then they found that the suspension was damaged. It should be reported to the police too, he did so and when they arrived half an hour later the deer had 'been removed'. They're apparently much prized locally.

Can you imagine an animal that size leaping out of the trees in front of your car??

Pleased they are OK. Good news the deer was killed outright, would have been awful to suffer .

Happened to me back in the late '60s (thereabouts) on the M4 just after the bit local to me opened, luckily it was a small deer and I had no passenger as it came through the screen, wrecked the passenger seat and ended up in the luggage bay, VW Estate.

Yes I absolutely agree. I once hit a huge pheasant on a similar road. Got home, get out of car and it was stuck in front grill with legs sticking out!! No wonder I’d had so many funny looks!!

Where did the accident happen Smow? It's almost a day occurrence in the New Forest.

Round here, New Forest, this is not uncomment.

Most stick it in the boot to make up the loss due to damage.

From experience I'd suggest being a bit wary of such meat thogh, the bones can shatter so some of the meat is not edible plus it can often be older deer so a bit tough. Stew it is the best way.
