I suspect he was much different in live shows, as stated here. I saw Tommy Cooper in 3 live shows and he was absolutely fantastic, much better than on TV. I think others have said the opposite though on here. I suppose it depends on your own experience.
He was ok, not my favourite though.
I think comedians can vary greatly when live. Saw Al Murray live - very dissappointing but I love his shows. Sa Jasper Carot and Phil Cool live they were superb and better then tv. But my wife who saw them in a different part of the country (I was working away) a few days prior saw a totally different show. I suspect they tailor it to the audience and you may find the 'crudeness' depends on the general audience response.

I remember the first time I saw Freddie Starr on the TV and I was in stitches. In later years , there were times when I would really enjoy watching him. His sketch with Adam Faith, singing with Elvis's backing group The Jordanaires, but then came his downfall and of course he just couldn't perform in the way we were used too, and then his life ended in a very sad way.
