Selenium deficiency plays a role in causing or aggravating anemia as glutathione peroxidase protects red blood cells from free radical damage and destruction. Selenium deficiency in women may result in infertility, miscarriages and retention of the placenta.

Low levels are associated with miscarriage. The association with cancer has not been proven - or has been disproved.
