To a certain extent, it is possible to sleep upright, unsupported, although the chances of falling over are particularly high.
However, you wouldn't actually reach a state of REM sleep, as this can only happen whilst lying down - Sheep for example, don't reach REM sleep, as they sleep standing.
Although certain large animals, such as horses and elephants sleep standing up (horses can "lock" their knees) sheep lie down to sleep.  Some soldiers will swear that they are able to sleep while marching.  I was raised in ranching country here in the western U.S. and knew a couple of old time cowboys that were able to sleep in the saddle.  Turned the horse loose and he just went home with the sleeping cowhand on back...
u could most certainly sleep standing up in space howerver i suppose some rest can be obstainded standing but satisfactory sleep no. it is also a spysicological issue if a man feels sure that his horse will ride him home if he is asleep then fine but another person would find it impossible to slep in this condition it depends on the person i suppose
I'm sure i've managed to fall asleep standing up before. Saturday night if I remember correctly. Didn't last long though, the floor rushed up to meet me quite quickly!
Damn Gravity,always spoils things !!

yessirree ! And in the wild west country, the Doctor goes home from the Charmond's asleep on his horse and the horse knows his way home - Giles winterborne has trained it as a wedding present for Grace mellstock and she goes and marries the doctor in stead.

and when he wakes in front of his wife - he shouts Felice ! Felice ! which sort of wrecks the whole marriage.

This is Thomas Hardy - of the wild west of wessex and this posting -  just in case er people are not sure - is to show that you dont have to go to the Wild West of America to get someone to sleep upright on a horse !

Solzhenitsyn describes being made to stand in the Russian prisons and gulags -and basically the prisoner goes mad.....

Hmmm run out of literary allusions

When my sister was young she used to fall asleep when she got home from school so my parents made her stand in the middle of the room to stop her from falling asleep..........it didnt work and she slept standing up.
