Villiers 2 stroke engine, 197 cc. Great times. I got pulled up by police several times, so I always carried my documents. I was stopped once and the police asked for my insurance, it said "social, domestic and pleasure"
He said " do you get aany pleasure driving this"
I was only 16 so said nothing.
It had no reverse so after passing my test I got a full motorbike licence.
I used to drive it to school and parked opposite. There were complaints from the residents.
The headmaster referred to my car as periparetic scrap iron.
I didn't pay anything for my first car, in 1968. I won it in a competition. It was a Hillman Imp. My wife and I had been married for 4 years then, and, although I had a licence, we didn't have a car. All our money went on the house. We didn't know how much it cost to run a car, so we decided to keep the Imp for a year and see how things worked out. We kept that car for 10 years, and we haven't been without a car since then.
