Thought I'd start a chat about jigsaws - does anyone still do them?

I have quite a few hobbies that don't need technology - various crafts and art related. stuff.

I know you can use technology with all of these now but what about the physical boxed jigsaws?

Anyone a fan?

Oooh, I've got quite a few jigsaw puzzles in a cupboard that I haven't done. Well reminded Mamya. No longer have a dining table so will have to get a board. Will let you know how I progress.
Used to do boxed puzzles and had a puzzle board but now do them on IPad as I was spending too much time finding the pieces the cats were playing with. Now use a site with a daily puzzle, you chose the number of pieces and have also downloaded some for journeys and to do on holidays
pal of mine invested in one of the roll-up mats to clear dining-room table when it was needed.
Handy thing.
The younger albas loved visiting and helping.
They were surprisingly good at finding the missing bit which was making the adults swear
I am at times - in fact i got one for Xmas, it's a circular one that's just the prism of colours, will probably be much harder than it looks. I also go through phases of doing online ones after someone posted a link to a site some time ago on here.
Yes I do them regularly. Daughter bought me a set of three puzzles as part of my christmas present. One is a mass of mult-coloured buttons, one is multi-coloured paperclips and the third one is liquorice torpedoes. Nice to get away from the TV sometimes.

I think I'm persuaded to have a try, I do have a dining table and no pets (apart from occasional visitors).

Partially sighted but I'll choose wisely to save frustration.

I have done some online but didn't seem to gain as much pleasure as I remembered from long ago.
I do love doing them, but havent done one for ages. My sister usually got one on the go, a 5,000 piece on her dining table..
Yes, got one on the go at the moment. I've always done hem but recently gave a lot of mine to charity shops and the library. Was going to do them again before I took them but realised my twenty year older eyes wouldn't be able to cope. I buy them from charity shops and have just started borrowing them from the library. My son in NZ always has one on the go and his son does them as well. My friend of 50 years also does them and her sister. In fact in quite surprising how many people do.
I have a puzzle caddy which zips open round three sides and also has two felt covered boards inside so you can have two puzzles on the go at once. Take it on holiday as it lies flat on the boot floor before all the luggage and fishing equipment goes in. When you're away for 4 to 6 weeks there are only so many books you can read while he is off fishing. Stack of CDs and a puzzle and that's me happy for the day.
I've always been a fan of them and nearly always have one of the go - currently it's a 1000 piece one of Downton Abbey. I swap puzzles with my sister - she gets a lot from charity shops in her area and when we've both done them, she takes them back. Otherwise I get them online from a firm called Alljigsaws.
Used to like doing them as a child with my grandparents. Not sure I would have the patience now (says the woman who will spend ALL day in a record office reading centuries old documents looking for one entry).

I'll definitely have a try and see if I can get back into them.
The best thing I ever did with jigsaws was to set one up in the corner of the waiting room of the renal unit. Waiting times could be two or three hours...every week for year after year.
Patients loved to pass the time doing the jigsaws and yes....I did put a hand sanitiser bottle on the table.... :-)

Worst thing I ever did....MrG got into doing the jigsaws so I bought him a large portapuzzle.....on the windiest day Kettering had ever experienced......you try walking along the High Street with a giant windbreak in front of you..... :-(

The first is a great idea, we often spent 8-10 hours at the unit when Bill was having Chemo.

The second I can picture quite easily, a new Olympic sport. ;-)
My mum used to love them. I’ve just chucked out a load. I thought they’d be too much hassle for a charity shop to deal with.
Can just picture Gness windsurfing down the High Street clinging on to her portapuzzle. Mine lives behind the settee when not in use as it is quite large.
Our local library always has a large jigsaw on the go and they're very popular. Every time I visit I try to place 2/3 pieces.
I had a jigsaw that was a crossword puzzle when finished. Started it on the portapuzzle but never finished so I boxed it up and gave to the charity shop with....COMPLETE.....on it....or so I thought.

When we moved here I gave the portapuzzle to my daughter and she's just sent me a photo of six pieces of the puzzle she found trapped inside......now I feel guilty... :-(
Oh it was hard work, BD..... they are large aren't they....I'm only little and when the wind caught one side of the blasted thing I went into a spin....
I thought someone might help but folk just stood and laughed.... :-(
We always have a 1,000 piece jigsaw on the go in the winter. We buy them from charity shops and sometimes from ebay, and return them in batches to a different charity shop each time. The search for puzzles we've not seen before becomes a hobby in itself!
