That's actually a common occurrence. How do you think that a spare engine can be transported around the world to where it is needed?
The wings of 747s actually have mounting points to allow this.
Don't they all carry a spare in the back ?

(Would save on AA bills.)

well usually they use freight air/sea it says in the article eddie, they only do this occasionally when in a hurry I guess, though it is designed for it as you say.
Does make a mockery of the odd Kilo extra of luggage though!
A few years back on our first flight in a 747, at that time you were allowed in the Cockpit, the pilot was giving me a run down on the instruments, I ask was it possible for the plane to take off / land on one engine the pilots reply was yes, that's power.
My father was a pilot and he told me that a 747 can glide for 100 miles without any engines. he may have been BSing me :-)
I understand that has happened Prudie.
Probably not, Prudie. Remember that 747 that had its engines choked by volcanic ash, some years ago. I think he "glided" for some considerable distance.
Mt St Helens volcano wasn't it?
Doesn't look like a complete engine to me.
for the story of BA009 and its ash choked engines, google "all 4 engines have failed", or "captain eric moody"
Thanks. Obviously not St Helens. Mount Galunggung.
I knew that, retro. ;))
// The wings of 747s actually have mounting points to allow this.//

you mean it is not tied on with string ? OMFG
//for the story of BA009 and its ash choked engines, google "all 4 engines have failed", or "

I suppose in this case he would have to change that to
' all 5 engines have failed'

[I am trying to help trying to help for chrissakes]
pp, string hasn't been used for years, these days they use very long cable ties, much safer.
The Air India 747 that was blown up over the Atlantic in 1985 was carrying a spare engine.
