Can someone explain to me in really simple terms why i could only see half the moon last night?

did you have one eye shut?
You are only seeing the part illuminated by the sun. You see varying degrees of the moon depending on your viewing angle. So in simple terms when you see a half moon if you drew a line between you and the moon and another between you and the sun, the angle of intersection would be 90 degrees. When it's a full moon it would be 180 degrees when a new moon 0 degrees.
The other half is necessarily obscured by the 'front'?
