In an amusing article about Twitter in this month's The Oldie magazine, there is an enlightening statistic.

The main political parties in the UK have about 2.5 million followers between them. Christiano Ronaldo (a Manchester United footballer) has about 100 million followers. As the article concludes, "That's how serious Twitter isn't."

how many of them are in Britain, though? I would not expect foreigners to be following Boris, except for entertainment.

People prefer to follow people, not companies or organisations. It's social media. Boris Johnson's account has 4.4M followers, the Conservative Party account has 534K followers.
