I can't see how Mrs Thatcher contributed to the field of science in any meaningful way, so Patrick Moore for me. Self-taught, he brought the wonders of the universe to millions. A very worthy contender.
On an achievement level of being the first woman prime minister in the UK it would have to be Margaret Thatcher but has already been stated she is still a divisive character which would probably rule her out.
I know Thatcher had a science degree but I don’t think she really qualifies as someone with a significant list of achievements in the science field.
A bit of a false choice as they may both be on the list but there isn’t a cats chance in hell of either of them being chosen.
TGL has been accepted as a candidate, I would vote for her,
and she's unlikely to offend the Working Class as they won't
see many £50 Pound Notes anyway.
Sadly, or perhaps not, we don’t get a vote.
I see there were 114,000 eligible nominations out of 170,000 which have been in turn been whittled down to a mere 800. Who on earth is getting paid to do all this sifting and whittling?! Must be quite a job
I don’t think Margaret Thatcher actually invented soft ice cream as such did she? She worked in the relevant Lyons food research team.
Still, undoubtedly she played her part: Mrs Whippy!
I don't want to see Mrs T (or That Bloody Woman as my granny used to call her) every time I get a £50 note out of my purse - happens a lot of course ;) so out of those two, I'd choose Moore.
Having Thatcher on a £50 is about the only way you couldn't stuff one into my hot little hand :/
Patrick Moore all the way, thatcher was never a meaningful scientist and Patrick Moore is an utter icon.
Patrick Moore, i hate the idea that thatcher is so prised simply because she was the first woman PM. how do we know at that time that she didn't identify as a man? Anyone ask her? ;)
