I am travelling to New York for 5 days tomorrow and I notice that my passport expires at the end of september 08. Will I be refused admission as I have less than 6 months left?

I would advise you to check today if possible with the US
Embassy regarding this matter.
If you are entering the USA using the Visa Waiver Program then read this page:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/with out_1990.html

where it says this:

They present a machine-readable passport (MRP) valid for six months past their expected stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions). This includes all categories of passports -- regular, diplomatic, and official, when the traveler is seeking to enter the United States for business or tourist purposes, for a maximum of 90 days
Have just seen in another answer details of the Passport advice line 0870 521 0410 available 24/7. Could they help
although your other answer seems to preclude this.
Best of luck
No you won't.

If you have a UK (and many others) passport you can travel as long as it is valid when you leave the US. There is one of the specific country agreements in place that titchfield's quote mentions

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/niv/ passport_validity.html provides confirmation of this
The 6-month rule is an urban myth - put about by travel agents so they don't have to learn the specific requirements for each country.............

For the USA - For nationals included in the Visa Waiver Program (see below), passports must be valid for at least 90 days from date of entry.
quote

If traveling under the Visa Waiver Program, the passport must be valid for at least 90 days from the date on which the holder enters the United States. If not, the holder will be admitted until the expiration date on the passport.

From US London Embassy website - quoted verbatim as no-one seems prepared to believe it.
