Red, they simply don't want them in their country, the same as we don't want (the vast majority) in ours.
not sure why they bother trying they wont get given a national insurance number so they arent going to be able to get any kind of support do they know we have our own citizens homeless on our streets
RH, Nothing to do with 'you know what'. The simple fact is France and the other EU countries don't want them either. Why would they? They're a burden on any society so our neighbours are only too pleased to wave them off - which is why we're pumping millions into France for little return.
I would rather not have any more of these migrants in our country.
However, these people are humans but I bet the deaths of some of them will not elicit the same outpouring of grief as the poor small souls lost in Solihull this past week and I believe that is a shame on society. I cannot imagine how those migrants suffered. R.I.P.
How desperate must one be to enter these frozen waters at this time of year? It’s being done for more than an’ better life’. Sometimes we are of the attitude * I’m all right Jack * rIP.
Good to see the season of peace on earth and good will to all men is still alive!
Choux, I find that a very strange comparison. These are not children unaware of the dangers of playing on an ice-covered lake. They're grown men who paid a lot of money to leave the safety of France.
Well it saves us the trouble of having to shoot them in the chanel , as is the opinion of at least one person on here
We are not alright. Cost of living crisis, soaring energy costs. Food prices increasing daily.

Our government is spending seven millions daily to put them up in cosy hotels, whilst our pensioners are suffering after years of paying tax and NI.

Looking at where this tragedy has taken place ( map) it appears to be midway , so why is it an automatic passage here and not France? French Navy are helping with the rescue mission but the rescued go to Ashford ?
Hi Bobbs, all good here.
And here SK, good to see you
The link says the tragedy happened "off the course of Kent, near Dungeness." Perhaps Ashford is the nearest hospital.
According to this , bodies were found in the strait of Calais before the first May Day call

Bobs, that's from November 2021!
Ah sorry Ken, it was linked to my news feed
Latest news is always preferable to a year ago.
No need for that, anneasquith. Everyone makes mistakes - even you.

Four dead.

//To go to these extremes then you have to be desperate.//

Help me out here, Helen, because I’m foxed. They are in France, in a safe and (fairly) civilised country. They can claim asylum there if they wish. Why are they desperate to get here?

//…by the end of the year, none of the cross-channel operators will accept bookings from foot passengers.//

That’s not quite correct. Brittany Ferries will continue to take foot passengers on all its routes (though they do not operate Calais to Dover). But it’s irrelevant. The main reason that would not work is that “leave to enter” is required before embarkation (i.e. you must present a passport or similar and, in most cases, a visa). That opportunity has always existed and the people who choose not to take it are those who have a good idea that without an asylum claim (which can only be made once in the UK) their entry would probably be denied.

//If they are found to be in the UK without a valid reason then they should be removed.//

Yes they should, but they’re not.

//…but I bet the deaths of some of them will not elicit the same outpouring of grief as the poor small souls lost in Solihull this past week...//

Why should it? Illegal migrants deliberately place themselves in peril by setting off to cross the Channel in totally unsuitable craft. They have no need to do so. By contrast the kiddies were doing what kids do – having a lark in the snow and ice. Foolish, but that’s how children are.

//...and I believe that is a shame on society.//

There’s no comparison between the two and the shame is that you choose to equate them.

//The link says the tragedy happened "off the course of Kent, near Dungeness." Perhaps Ashford is the nearest hospital.//

Looking at the tracker data it seems it occurred near enough in mid-Channel. I have a friend who works in the William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) where the casualties were taken and he tells me that the hospital “cleared” it’s A&E department in the early hours of this morning to prepare for their arrival. When he arrived for work early this morning the department was surrounded by police and people were being stopped at the hospital gate by police and many turned away, being directed to use other hospitals.
(I have zero explanation as to why this did not send ages ago at the time of writing and pressing 'Answer Now'. I'll try again, but obviously it won't slot itself in to the correct timeslot this time.)

No one is that desperate to leave France. There is no excuse.
