It's been £10 since it was introduced in 1972. No government has had the balls to cancel it

Barry @ 08.09 "No Government has had the balls to cancel it"
Thought the Cons would have cancelled it .they are a load of Halls
£10 in 1972 is worth £155.94 today
£10 in 1972 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £155.94 today
The government has just given everyone a considerable sum towards their winter fuel bills. No complaints there.
Me either Naomi but saying as Gully seems quite surprised at the £10 payment and appears not to have heard of it? Confirms he’s a young wind up merchant with nothing better to do with his time
Complaining about getting a bonus is certainly rather bizarre.
Just a slight correction - they are not being given it by the government but by the people who pay tax and NI. Quite where you get the idea that the government has its own money is unclear.

Other than that, a very good question which highlights, yet again, the evil nature of a government which spent around £400bn of taxpayers' money, paying people to sit at home munching Hobnobs for the best part of two years.
NJ

Nothing wrong with Hobnobs especially the chocolately ones
// State Pensioners who are struggling to pay their bills , keep warm, and feed themselves //

Inspite of the winter fuel allowance, energy discounts, council tax reduction and £10 Xmas bonus, many state pensioners will face an uphill financial struggle.

Perhaps one way of combating the problem of keeping warm, would be to gather several state pensioners (with their consent), placing them under one household throughout the winter period?

Since many of the elderly complain of being alone, it would also promote much needed companionship.

Also food bills would work out cheaper. Since a jumbo size box of wheatybangs breakfast cereal, gives you more bang for your buck.
Err Zebu, that already exists as Care Homes

NJ @ 08.43 "They are not given it by the government but by the people who pay tax and NI." ...Do you mean the same people who gave Baroness Mone £29m And her Cronies PPE Med £203m , for useless PPE equipment And the same people who gave Matt Hancock's former neighbour £40m for useless PPE, equipment. And the same tax payers who are paying for MPs staff Christmas parties .
And you are trying to justify This rag tag mob of a Tory Govt Paying state pensioners a measly £10 Xmas bonus. Shame on you.
How much of a Christmas bonus did Labour pay while in power?
// Zebu,that already exists as Care Homes//

I am referring to those state pensioners who live alone in council and private housing.

The very same people I meet that come into the ageUK daycentres. They have real concerns about the cost of living crisis and equally important, the abject feeling of loneliness!
Zebu, how do you suggest these people be accommodated in other people's homes? Many elderly people live in small flats and even if they don't, unless the host has spare rooms and beds it's not a viable plan.
It's not 'many of the pensioners' - it is every pensioner regardless of their income and savings.
Bazile, it isn't every pensioner. Some pensioners are very comfortable.
Sorry, barry, not bazile.
