It's hot so what? gawd there are counties in the world that are like this every day, they don't close schools and have national emergency. Same when it snows, why are we so carp at weather? I never had a day off school for weather, ever and I was at school in 1976.

//…and it is almost certainly due to climate change.// No it’s not. It’s due to something called “weather.” An area of low pressure is forming over the Azores in the Atlantic, to the south-west of the British Isles. Air flows anti-clockwise round low-pressure systems so the wind will flow around the low-pressure system from north Africa and the Iberian...

^^^^ hey my stalker has piped up!
Oh it happens often, Anne. Naughty I know but sometimes for the fun of it we agree to agree on a thread.....square of choc or glass of red on the table....count the seconds until.....and the closest one gets the prize.
A bit weird though. Having someone waiting for you to post so they can get a tad manic.....but you'll know how that feels.... :-)
Lol I know ,
I said many Pasta not all ref Med holidays. Don't really know why I said anything on the thread at all unless it was to join in and say lots of people are going to die. My daughter is currently on a flight to New York where it's going to be mid 30s most of this week. Should I have told her not to go because it's too dangerous?
I just saw this on Twitter...it might be relevant

//So you'll know that hot countries have an abundance of:
- A/C and ceiling fans
- Pools
- White buildings, cars
- Shaded porches, terraces etc
- Cool tiled floors
- Different working hours
- Bottled water everywhere
We don't. This isn't like your holiday //

No Prudie, I'm sure she's old enough to decide for herself.
Besides, there's likely to be far more air conditioning there ;)
Prudie, is your daughter a vulnerable person?
No but vulnerable people are at risk of something or other every day of their lives, very unfortunate and one hopes the majority have someone to watch over them. Sadly some won't. All extremes of weather puts them at risk. This hasn't been just about the vulnerable though. This thread and others similar have people implying thousands of us are going to die or the country to spontaneously combust. Some posters are without doubt being over dramatic. I'm not going to say anymore, its too hot to put myself in the line of fire.
Well I’m sure your daughter will be fine .
So our runways are melting!! Why didn't they ask Jamaica what they use for tarmac on their runways & roads cause they sure ain't melting!!!!
As I said earlier I think warnings are helpful although there are always those who think it won’t happen to them anyway - but I agree with Prudie. Some people do tend to get rather over-dramatic in any situation even slightly adrift from the norm.
Is 40C "slightly adrift" from the norm ie 25C?

The "average" temperature for July is low 20's dropping to low 10s overnight. Today it's 35+ in many places (East Anglia, Midlands, London and South East), down to 20+ tonight - so well adrift from the norm
No, gingjbee - and I didn’t say it is. I was speaking generally rather than specifically.
The oddest thing about this thread is the use of words like hysteria, hysterics, over-dramatic.
I don't see that anywhere.
There are ill people and/or carers who need to be advised of extreme temperatures.
If that applies to you then heed it.
If not then carry on as usual.
Well naomi...this thread seems to be about the specifics of the current weather situation, not generalisations.
"People will die" is the warning
no there will be enough ABers insisting that they died from something else or would have died anyway

that's life on AB !
That’s me told then …but I’ll post as I see fit, gingjbee - and that’s you told.
"Normal runways are coping perfectly well"
probably a good job your daughter wasnt flying from luton which isnt coping perfectly well apparently
I have to say I'm impressed that my various frailties, conditions and general decrepitude haven't stopped me doing manual labour today.
Coming up on ten hours at the coal face and nary a flicker or twinge.

There's life in the ould Doug yet. :-)
SharonA, I've been to a fair number of of Caribbean Islands and they have concrete runways...They aint gonna melt:)
