Of cotton wool to keep wrapping people up in?
I can remember back in the 50/60s when my family struggled to pay fuel /food / rent bills, it really is nothing new, but you had to stand on your own two feet. If you didn't have the money you went without, or paid when you could, little at a time.

It now seems that every little problem families have they go screaming for handouts. How long can this carry on, and should it carry on?
In my view its teaching people nothing, you won't help anyone by keep on propping them up.

In another 5 months or so you will find some complaining that their kids will have no Christmas presents. Will Sunak come up with a giveaway for that also. :)

SANDRA, you posted, "Getting through on your own makes one a better person."

If you were to refund the £400, would that not be getting through on your own, thus making you a better person?
If it goes straight to your supplier then how would she refund it?

THECORBYLOON. You are obviously not focused on my previous posts so its pointless me keep exchanging views with you. Its just getting to the stage of me repeating the same.
BOBBI, the £400 could be repaid directly (by cheque if need be) to the utility provider with a wee note explaining it was a refund.

I’m not sure until it’s companies deal in cheques any more.
Utility
Eight fifty-pound notes then.

^^ They wouldn't be allowed to take it back.
I doubt very much anyone would have the good grace to do that, I’m being totally honest, we can absorb the increases many can’t, would I send it back ? Absolutely not, it’ll get paid straight off my utility account after all we may get a very bad Winter this year
.
All talk and no action!!
"They wouldn't be allowed to take it back."

How not?
What is the point of sending it back to the utility company, whether by cheque or cash or whatever. They are the last people who need it and they aren't going to give it back to the Govt are they. Pointless.
If you leave your utility bill £400 in credit for the foreseeable future it’s there for you to give back when the government wants to collect it! But I suspect it will go the way of the yearly heating payment to SOME of the pensioners and that’s not on their heart
The wokest of the woke would say, publicly, with great Gusto, they were donating the credit placed on their energy account to charity. Privately, I doubt it. Even the well off like free money.

Most rich people give any winter allowance away to charity because works and pensions cannot receive it back by law.

Lord Sugar tried some years back. He rang the Works and pensions and told them not to send it, he didn't need it, they refused and said he had to accept it.
The Government will not collect the Money as its a Grant not a loan.
"If you leave your utility bill £400 in credit for the foreseeable future it’s there for you to give back when the government wants to collect it!"

That is why I was saying give the £400 directly to the company with an explanatory note.
‘ Author Most rich people give any winter allowance away to charity’

Do they, Sandra? You got any evidence for that?
In that case I expect to see dozens of posts from those that have stated they don’t need it - giving it away to charity
Question Author
The big draw back with all this is that the energy companies will be clapping their hands knowing the government will step in. Hence they will keep increasing such. The reduction in petrol tax is a good example, its was eaten up within a month.
