Of cotton wool to keep wrapping people up in?
I can remember back in the 50/60s when my family struggled to pay fuel /food / rent bills, it really is nothing new, but you had to stand on your own two feet. If you didn't have the money you went without, or paid when you could, little at a time.

It now seems that every little problem families have they go screaming for handouts. How long can this carry on, and should it carry on?
In my view its teaching people nothing, you won't help anyone by keep on propping them up.

In another 5 months or so you will find some complaining that their kids will have no Christmas presents. Will Sunak come up with a giveaway for that also. :)

Pasta I was not insinuating you knew nothing about nutrition. I was disagreeing with your statement that cheap is not necessarily sustainable or nutritionally balanced.

Would you rather teach a person how to look after themselves or their family within their means, or prefer to bung them handouts to waste on junk food?
How many women (mainly) have you seen on TV saying they can’t afford to feed their kids. Yet they are the size of a house themselves so must eat all the food themselves, covered in tattoos and dyed hair (all cost money). Money management should be taught in schools and cookery lessons should be compulsory.
Oh wow!
Yes boto I agree, what on earth is wrong with suggesting people learn to cook? I see people in Aldi with trollies full of ready meals when it would cost a fraction of the cost to make it themselves, if only they knew how.
The school is not entirely to blame - the parents must take on the majority of the blame!
Considering the ages of those saying that they are struggling then the parents will be in their 70's and on here those are the ones shouting the loudest!
not necessarily redhelen, the 70yr olds may well have taught their children cooking, budgeting etc , but their adult children, and even adult grand-children may choose otherwise
Being brought up in the 1940's I well remember being cold and hungry and I also remember that life expectancy was a lot lower then it is today. 60 was considered to be old and 70 ancient and very few managed to survive into their 80's. Thanks to the advance in medical science and the help given by governments life expectancy is now a lot longer, hence there are more people reaching the age of 100. Many of the persons now receiving financial help were the very same people who made this country what it is today.
Good answer Gramps, I was fortunate that I never was cold or hungry as a child of the 40s, most of my friends who are in my age group were taught by their mothers how to cook and then at school with Domestic Science , and let’s not forget family sizes were much bigger then, I’m the youngest of 5 myself , mothers had to look for ways of feeding large families and they did that admirably
The handouts are just an expensive pre-election campaign. I appreciate that some people will be very grateful for them and others will *** the money up against the wall but either way it’s no solution really. The money would be better invested in local renewable energy and in bringing the costs down long term.
I thought the money was to be given as a discount off your energy bills not cash in hand. Or have I got this wrong ?
Not sure how that would work andres unless you’d have to apply with your utility account number ?
The 650 goes into bank accounts in 2 payments. This is for cost of living.
The 400 goes towards energy payments.
Plus those who get water fuel payment will get extra.
Probably via energy supplier bobbi.
Which is probably a good idea Pasta
Quite simply. I 100% agree with Sandra.
“Sometimes the poor are praised for being thrifty. But to recommend thrift to the poor is both grotesque and insulting. It is like advising a man who is starving to eat less.
Oscar Wilde.
No one is advising anyone to be thrifty' or eat less. Just use what little they have to the best advantage to go further and have a healthier diet.
I wonder if the £400 and possibly the £150 for the Council Tax or any other grants will be returnt by SANDRA?
I believe its going straight to the energy companies so Sandra would not have a choice. However, If anyone feels that bad about it they could donate the amount to the food bank or a homeless shelter.
I know it will be paid as a credit but unless she pays back the £400, she will be paying £400 less than she thinks she and apparently everyone else, should be.
