Would you rather have the short term bauble of Boris' scalp or the longer term increased chance of winning the 2024 GE?

That's not a choice. Boris resigning will increase the chance of the Tories winning the next election.
haha - just picturing Boris' scalp hanging outside Gully's wigwam!

yes that's the point BHG, Labour et al should be trying to save Boris. A bit like when the Tories joined Labour and voted for jezza. Are the left capable of tactics or will their hunger for a small meal deprive them of the feast?

Or it could be that people are genuinely disgusted at his behaviour, the time it took for him to admit what he had done (but no more), and his weasly "apology".
A proven scheming liar allegedly running the country can't be a good thing at all.
While they're cleaning house though they might want to get rid of that tough talking empty suit Patel and replce her with someone even slightly capable.

You seem to think it's just a game, Tora, with no real consequences, the man is a throwback almost to the Rotten Boroughs.

They may be drM but for those that want a Labour win it is better he stays.
I don't personally regard Johnson going as a "short term bauble"
If you heard Wes Streeting last night, he avowed that it would help Labour perhaps if Johnson stayed but he was still calling for him to go.

The problem isn't just Boris Johnson, and that's one reason why I am not sure the parliamentary party has the nerve to try to unseat him, and I don't think he will ever resign unless he's forced to.
When Johnson took over as PM at the height of the Brexit crisis, he effectively - almost certainly guided by Dominic Cummings - effected a mini-coup within that party by purging the cabinet of anyone who was not a pretty hardline supporter of Brexit. Many MPs lost the whip, some left the party by the time of the election etc.
This had the added advantage for him that he could claim that he was leading a "new" government.
If he goes, it's likely that half the cabinet at least would go too, depending on who took over. It's also possible that a civil war would break out between the different factions. Unless the party agrees a single candidate to take over (which could happen) the whole process could take up to three months. If it isn't done quickly that could take us quite close to an election. Then again, new leaders often get a poll bounce, as happened to Gordon Brown in 2007.
there are too many uncertainties to be able to say that Johnson going would only be good for Labour in the short term.

Does anyone seriously think Labour has a chance of winning the next election? Labour has been doomed to opposition since Scotland went SNP. Even if all the "red wall" seats come back to Labour it will be a hung parliament.

doug, I don't think it's a game but one of the reasons the Tories win most of the time is that they are pragmatic, that's why we elected Agent Cob to lead labour. See? If labour want to get back into power again they'll need to learn Tory ruthlessness, logic and pragmatism. At the moment they want Boris' head on a spike more than they want to win.

DrM: //Does anyone seriously think Labour has a chance of winning the next election? Labour has been doomed to opposition since Scotland went SNP. Even if all the "red wall" seats come back to Labour it will be a hung parliament. // - don't think so but the public are in a mood to punish Boris and the Tories, if Boris goes then they are stronger. Labour high command should have spotted that and actively making sure Boris stays as, yes, he has become a Liability. If he stays there is a chance of a hung parliament in 2024, if he goes, Richie Rich will wipe the floor with Rodders. They must see that surely.
Never mind about how good or bad his presence is for Labour. Let's consider what is good for the country. Boris Johnson's policies in a number of important areas do not concur with Tory principles. A sizeable number of people (enough to see a Tory government into power) want a Tory government, not one that is Tory in name only.
NJ's post reflects what a lot of voters think who are not Labour supporters.
And as for wanting Johnson's head on a spike, a lot of Tory MPs seem to want that, or claim they want it.
I think you get an idea of how awful things have become under Johnson when you see people like Sir Roger Gale, a dyed-in-the-wool Conservative, and think, as a Labour supporter: well there's one decent man! Worth half a dozen of Johnson and his hapless cabinet.
I don't know much about Mr Sunak but I do know how easy it is to spend money like a drunken sailor when there's no personal cost or down side.

He may impress in the big chair or he may just be another with a lust for power in the short term, just something on a list to be ticked off, only time will tell.
Impossible to have a decent discussion with a brain washed Tory . Sorry .
It's pretty clear that Sunak is not a natural tax and spend fan.
I think he is respected because he appears to be competent, not loved because he's the man with the money.
NJ- //Never mind about how good or bad his presence is for Labour. Let's consider what is good for the country.//

This.

I certainly don't agree with the rest of NJ's post, suggesting that an old-style Conservative government is what's best for the country, but I certainly do support this point. Everybody is hopping about the PM like vultures around an injured animal, trying to get in the right position for when the inevitable happens. Both the left and right of AB are circling round, trying to either cling on for dear life or make a grab for power, but the only thing anyone here seems to care about is short term bragging rights.

How about what is best for the UK in general? Personally, I think a strong leader is now needed after the buffoonery of Johnson's term, preceded by the incompetence of May's. I'll get behind anybody who will protect this country's interests, regardless of which party they lead.

anne: "Impossible to have a decent discussion with a brain washed Tory . Sorry . " - give it a go love, I am after all trying to comprehend the lefty thinking on this.
No.
Can’t see Labour winning with or without Boris. For the good of the country, someone who know what they are doing instead of Boris, would be better.
