I'm not sure it's that complicated, atheist. Having known people, as I'm sure you have, who have unfortunately died early- I don't know of anyone who would have suggested they should never have lived. Look at it from their point of you, rather than "ours".
Point of view... lol

"NO, armed response over react in my view in the UK, called in for the slightest thing. Was watching a police program the other week, were three cows had got out of their field, a good way away from the road, first reaction from the officer there was, we may have call arm response and shoot them. Its almost as if they can't wait for a call, to have some practice with their shooters."

I do think though that a lot of these live action doccos do encourage the contibutors to hype the situation...so instead of saying "oh bloody cows again, stop the traffic, corral the cars, call the farmer....." they are encouraged to comment with worst case scenarios. Panicking cows can be dangerous and have killed people so I would not say that it never would happen but I do think they over egg a bit
//Davebro, 21.15. Can we apply that to humans too?//

Maybe in the future to solve the overpopulation problem!

Most deer herds are subject to an annual cull anyway so the beast was probably expecting it would happen.
no it wasn't, it would likely found its own way home. what a senseless act by the police.
The link doesn't give a full account of why the deer was killed. It just says that police took this action because the deer was a danger to people and motorists.

We very occasionally see deer in our street here in North Manchester and we assume they have made their way here from Tandle Hill Country Park in Oldham. Don't recall any having been shot by the police though.
"Atheist : "Pixie; are you saying that animals bred for food are in some way OK to eat because they are bred to be slaughtered? "

pixie374: "Yes atheist... if that's the only reason they are alive in the first place."

Tu quoque-ery time again pixie374 ?

I see the double standard, bleeding heart, handwringers are out in force on this issue.... make mine pork, eh ?

My post has nothing to do with meat farming or meat consumption. It was about an animal that I feel was unnecessarily killed because it accidentally ended up roaming around in an urban area.
I was listening to a vet on the radio giving his opinion. He said that the rut is fast approaching and this animal could prove extremely dangerous to anyone approaching it. Not a subject I know a lot about, but had to agree with his logic.
// What if a motorist....... shoot it when they had the chance?"//

well it would be dead by then, wouldnt it?

Newton Heath, around the Irwell, you get red deer.
// He said that the rut is fast approaching //

hmm - much ado about rutting....

( sozza just trying to upmarket this thread)
There's NOTHING on this planet more dangerous than humans !!! Poor stag was probably terrified and with good cause ...... RIP beautiful animal.
I'm happy to say the police in the UK don't often have to use their firearms, however I would think you have to have an interest in guns to want to join a firearm unit, and the firing range must become very boring after a time, so when an opportunity arises, lets go for it, do they toss a coin to see who gets the thrill.
//A danger to motorists? Utter ***.//

Clearly you have not seen the damage done to a car by a deer/stag. A couple of years ago my SiL hit one out by Wimborne. It was on the dash cam it ran into the back of a Transit somehow and was spun in front of her. Absolutely no chance of missing it the collision threw the Ford KA up in the air and totalled it.

This is not unusual round here and in the New Forest.
Yes they can do a lot of damage, so can a lot of much more dangerous animals in other countries. Some live with bears for example 24/7 they don't just shoot them on site, just in case. We had a deer in the street and it seemed we pooed our pants. No attempt other than shooting it was made.

Were you there? What exactly happened if you were there?
Authorities, want to upset blue rinse Tories? Destroy an animal.
Funny that Llandudno manage s to live with regular visits from the local wild goats, hefty beggars, big horns, attitude problems, people learn to avoid them, drivers stop to let them go by, then when they have demolished enough hedges they wander up the Great Orme until the next point.

I take the point about stags being more aggressive in the rut, but unless it was directly challenged that wouldn't be an issue.I

If they had waited till nightfall a few people with boards could have steered it to a safer place where it could be tranquilized. Doubt there would be any appropriately trained vets in Bootle, nearest would be Chester Zoo I would think.
